Greek political smackdown on live TV as extreme right figure punches female rival

June 8, 2012 - 7:15AM

A Greek Communist party official is slapped on live TV by a representative of far-right extremist party Golden Dawn.

A Greek politician is being hunted by police after the country's election campaign turned into an ugly brawl on live TV.

The spokesman of the extreme-right Golden Dawn party, after trading insults of "commie" and "fascist" with two left-wing politicians, lunged at the women, smacking one three times across the face and throwing a glass of water at another.

The violent display a week and a half before crucial elections has stunned Greeks as they seek to avoid a catastrophic exit from Europe's common euro currency.

The man who wants to push the people further into debt slavery, has televised violent outburst hitting his female opponent or the lefty seeking to give the people relief?

Righties: They always get so insulted when you point out that they are belligerent, bigoted bullies but then they live up to the accusation so often.

on the Greek debt as a means of getting out of the EU and back to using the drachma. While Golden Dawn wants to push Greeks into fascism, but not into debt slavery.

Greece's left-wing party SYRIZA that did so well in the first election, and is polling well in this one so far, insists that the austerity and debt repayment have to be renegotiated but they do not want Greece to leave the euro or the EU.

I read he's on the run and there's a big manhunt to try to find him. So, he's a coward also.

She handled it well. He probably made her very popular, exactly what the stupid moron was trying not to do.

I wonder if being a far right cultist is some kind of medical condition, something the can't help because they were born with it? A disease usually has symptoms that are present in all those suffering from the disease. And no matter what country you find them in, those symptoms are present.

I compiled this playlist for our own nation's debt woes, Golden Dawn, but I think "Music for Governments to Default By" suits your program to a T. Enjoy, ya creepy neo-fascists!

Oh, and you're also totally unorginal with your party name. Golden Dawn? Really, stealing the name of the 19th-20th century occult order. Of all the people to piss off, I think occultists are near the bottom of my list.

to dish out the usual anti-Greek propaganda.

First of all, the Nazi thug, currently an MP, did not simply "punch" a "female rival" (no punches - very hard slaps), he hit a woman MP, repeatedly, unprovoked. Calling her a rival makes it sound almost like there was a fight.

Second, this sentence: "The violent display a week and a half before crucial elections has stunned Greeks as they seek to avoid a catastrophic exit from Europe's common euro currency."

is pure neoliberal propaganda. Most Greeks are seeking to survive the catastrophe imposed on them by Europe's common currency, an odious debt, and the insane austerity conditions of the Troika memo. But that context didn't make this guy into a Nazi and a thug who hit a woman, and his action would be equally stunning whatever else may have been in the news this week.

it's all they have. Look at the shit our authoritarians do, vandalism, destruction of property, intimidation, physical violence of all sorts including rape & murder.

And the good people of WI. just voted in favor of more of this.

20. Reaction from inside Greece (highlighting Golden Dawn's attacks on women)

Across Greece's deeply divisive political landscape there was agreement that the extraordinary incident, replayed on TV channels throughout the day, had unmasked Golden Dawn for what it really is: a group of intolerant extremists who resort to violence to make their point.

In recent months, and especially in the weeks that have elapsed between Greece's two ballots, the party has been linked to a number of attacks on migrants, liberals, human rights activists and journalists, particularly women.

In a statement KKE, the communist party of Greece, appealed to "workers, young people and pensioners" who voted for Golden Dawn to abandon the extremists. A spokesman said the stridently xenophobic group had used its anti-immigrant, anti-bailout platform to hoodwink Greeks into voting for it.

Greece's huge immigrant population has borne the brunt of the tidal wave of anger and despair that last month catapulted Chrysi Avgi (Golden Dawn) into parliament. A surge of recent attacks in recent weeks on migrants, particularly from Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been blamed squarely on the neo-fascist party. Immigrants have been assaulted in their homes, on the streets, on trains and buses in and outside city centres with most requiring intensive hospital care.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2012/jun/07/golden-dawn-tv-assault-greece

The article states that Golden Dawn's poll numbers have dropped below 5% (from 7% they received in the recent election) which would be below minimum needed for a seat in parliament.
