The letter, posted on the website Literary Hub and credited to authors Andrew Altschul and Mark Slouka, states in no uncertain terms that Trump "deliberately appeals to the basest and most violent elements in society" and "denigrates women and minorities."
The list of writers who signed the letter includes Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winners and reads like a Whos Who of American literature, according to the Los Angeles Times. Of course many writers equally revolted by the prospect of a President Trump dont have the luxury of expressing their political views without risking their careers and those of their publishers, but its still refreshing to see ignorance, bigotry and nascent fascism called out for what it is by the nations best authors.

(15,139 posts)well honed critical thinking skills -- just the sort of people the Trump crowd despises. Their open letter will be met with derision by that bunch.
I remember back in 1968 George Wallace making fun of "pointy head" intellectuals and his supporters lapping it up. Same shit. Different decade.

(42,285 posts)A woman called out "Senator, you have the vote of every thinking person!" And he supposedly replied "That's not enough, madam, we need a majority! " Alas, it probably isn't a true story...
But for a real quote, I gove you this:
Unreason and anti-intellectualism abominate thought. Thinking implies disagreement; and disagreement implies nonconformity; and nonconformity implies heresy; and heresy implies disloyaltyso, obviously, thinking must be stopped. But shouting is not a substitute for thinking and reason is not the subversion but the salvation of freedom.
