Earlier this week, Ted Nugent gave an interview with conservative radio host Joe Pags. The musician has long been known for his right-wing views and they were on full display during this interview where he compared Bernie Sanders to Mao Zedong and claimed the Vermont senator wanted to “give [communism] a shot here.”

Clearly Nugent has missed the numerous speeches Sanders has given on his Democratic Socialism and how it differs from communism. Either that or Nugent simply doesn’t care to be educated about the differences. A bit later in his rant, and let’s be clear it was more rant than anything, Nugent said “there is nothing more anti-American than the freaks that hate me.” Some people might argue that threatening to kill the President of the United States is more anti-American than disagreeing with a washed up musician, but apparently Nugent isn’t one of them.

Nugent also went on to claim that the NRA isn’t a gun lobby, but just an organization representing mom and pop Americans standing up for their rights. Apparently, Nugent isn’t aware of the millions that the gun industry has given to the NRA or the ways in which the gun industry benefits from them. In addition to providing a market for their products, the NRA also serves as an effective shield for the gun lobby whenever a mass shooting occurs. Instead of protesting Smith & Wesson or Glock, people protest the NRA. Certainly, the NRA likes to portray itself as protecting individual rights, but in reality it’s the gun industry that benefits the most from their existence.

In addition to calling Sanders a communist and defending the NRA, he also went on to attack members of the LGBT community and their allies. He criticized numerous musicians who cancelled concerts in states that have anti-LGBT laws and claimed they weren’t upholding “American values.” The musician then went on to claim that he doesn’t hate transgender people, but simply thinks they have a “mental illness.”
