Orlando Nightclub Gunman Scouted Walt Disney World as Potential Target: Source

By Stephanie Petit

The gunman behind the Orlando nightclub shootings, the deadliest mass shooting in American history, recently scouted Walt Disney World as a potential target, a federal law enforcement source tells PEOPLE.

Omar Mateen and his wife, Noor Zahi Salman, visited Walt Disney World in April, the source says. Salman told federal authorities on Sunday that her husband had more recently been "scouting Downtown Disney and Pulse [nightclub] for attacks."

Unlike the four Disney World theme parks, Downtown Disney, which was recently renamed Disney Springs, doesn't have security and bag check before entry.

Metal detectors have been installed outside Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot since 2015 and guests are selected at random for screening.

to make a splash. One example (unless it has changed) is the Universal CityWalk at the entrance to the two Universal Studio parks.

I was there once when during a fist fight they tried to move a lot of people out of the area. There's still a lot of construction and people get funneled to relatively few exits.

I go pretty regularly and am very security minded by profession. I've feared something bad happening there for some while.

The parks have a lot of guards at the front door but DS is harder to control.

I was at Disneyland in February. It was a basic "empty your pockets" security deal with random searches.

My boyfriend and I had 3 day passes, and the running joke of the trip was that security would always, always, always pick me for "random" pat downs. Since we moved between parks every day, I started just walking off to the side because I knew it was coming. Porn does not contain that many hand jobs. I feel like money should've been exchanged.
