Dems likely to hold Giffords seat

Democrats are headed for a victory in tomorrow's special election to replace Gabby Giffords in the House, but the relevance of the result in Arizona to much of anything else appears limited.

Democrat Ron Barber leads with 53% to 41% for Republican Jesse Kelly, with Green Party candidate Charlie Manolakis polling at 4%. Barber is well liked by voters in the district, sporting a 54/38 favorability rating. Kelly, meanwhile, has very high negatives with only 37% of voters rating him positively while 59% have a negative opinion.

We find that the likely electorate for tomorrow's election supported Barack Obama over John McCain 50-44. McCain actually won the district by a 52-46 margin in 2008. This, along with the special election in New York's 26th Congressional District last May, is one of only two races recently where we've found a likely electorate significantly more Democratic than the Presidential one in 2008, and it suggests Democrats are unusually motivated to come out and vote to keep Giffords' seat in their hands.

for this Arizona Democrat.

I am frequently "amused" by the comments to my local rag's online comment section, where the Kelly supporters, clearly are NOT kelly supporters; but rather, anti-President Obama posters ... Just like the romney "supporters."

The typical comments to any Kelly article (paraphrasing and sometimes literal) is, "Well, (President) Obama will be the death of this nation."

And this is being encouraged by the Kelly campaign. Witness the latest, and most frequently aired, Kelly Attack ad. It refers to Barber as a "rubber-stamp" candidate and cites to Barber's support of &quot President) Obama's Cap and Trade Bill" and has darkened pictures of President Obama and Nancy Pelosi.

When the few Democrats posting to the comment section point out: first, Cap and Trade was not President Obama's Bill (even though he came out in support of it), but had bipartisan sponsorship and orginally came from a rightwing think tank; and secondly, THERE IS NO CAP AND TRADE BILL, it died in the Senate in 2010 ... the posters just go back to repeating, "Well, (President) Obama will be the death of this nation."

Arizona is a very depressing place to be ... although every how and then a local editoral cartoonist nails the nail on the head:
