Very hungry canopener bridge defeats fancy, new warning system

11'-8" WON'T BE STOPPED!

Published on Jul 7, 2016
In May, the Dept. of Transportation installed a very nice LED blank-out warning sign at the 11foot8 bridge. The new sign is combined with a traffic light that stops traffic when an overheight truck approaches. Yet, when the bridge is hungry, it will eat. Watch as the canopener lures in an unsuspecting moving truck and chews up the roof.

Well, it causes about one in every 300000 drivers a problem, so they should fix it! struggle4progress Jul 2016 #5

Looks like that truck is tall enough that he'd have had to let all the air out of his tires to get under that bridge.

I hope the driver is OK, that was a hell of a bang.

yet the light is still green when the driver goes through.

shouldn't it turn red then have another sign light up that reads, in huge letters,

"Hey, dumb ass, you are about to destroy your truck"

wouldn't that be better?

Would be how a driver should interpret that

Yes, I read English fine, but "Overheight must turn" strikes me as not he clearest message that could be sent - particularly for non-English readers. If you are a fan of that channel as I am, you know a lot of the trucks are rental vans being driven by people who never drove a truck before that day, and may be independent contractors eking out a living in a new country.

For what they spent on that sign, a mechanical alert - like horizontal pipes hanging from rods that swivel, would give a definite "wtf are you doing?" warning.
