the US (or a least a good step toward abolishing it). This weekend, there were about 200 people wandering between University Mall and GMU playing Pokemon Go.
In my neighborhood, older teenagers and 20-somethings were running up and down the streets, around our parks and bike paths playing Pokemon Go. These are people who are never outside and never getting exercise. The person stuck indoors playing games 24/7 finally went outside for some fresh air. Of course, their nose was still stuck in a screen, but it is a start.

(14,449 posts)We had the family reunion this weekend and they were playing. A few were literally on my shirt when they directed their phone to me. Now I am seeing news articles. I feel so in the know today. Lol.

(45,529 posts)It is essentially a gps game. You have to be outside to play, walking, biking, or jogging. Going over 10 miles a hour removes you from play, so no cars. The faster you go, the better chance you have for finding pokemon and they are concentrated in public parks, landmarks, etc.

(12,132 posts)but she couldn't catch it as she missed it and then we drove past it. I imagine if you're at a red light long enough you could get one.
It also seems you don't get any mileage (kilometerage?) credit for your incubator while driving.
My boss and I left for lunch a while ago and on the way back we stopped in a few parking lots and found some .
Ridiculous, I know - we are grown-ass men. But If I don't catch enough my daughter will laugh at me for pokefailing.

(16,129 posts)works better than trying shame people into doing things they don't enjoy.
And it is activity that no one is maligned for not being "good enough" at.
Most of the activity resistant people I know learned that in school, where PE classes are incredibly punitive for those who aren't especially skilled at athletic games or climbing a rope.

(45,529 posts)making gym open and fun for everyone and not punishing the weak and uncoordinated. The local elementary school has a before school daily fun run, and has both yoga and tai chi. They have all types of things that the non- athletic can excel at such as ping pong, archery, zumba, etc. It is a far cry from gym class in the 1970s.

(16,129 posts)Two are in high school, one is in Elementary and at least at our small town schools, PE is just as awful as it always has been.

Mostly these days PE is weight loss focused. High school PE has them doing "Biggest Loser" exercise videos most days and shaming or lauding kids for their BMI.

(838 posts)One of my coworkers has been playing it for the last few days. He's not the most svelte guy in the world, but yesterday he was so happy he'd walked 5km to hatch a pokemon egg. He was clearly very proud of of his accomplishment and I was happy for him. Now I make sure to not only ask him how his kids are doing but how well he's coming along with training his pokemon.
I don't play the game yet myself, I'm waiting for a few more updates to fix the battery drain and crashes before I give it a whirl. But I'm excited at the idea!

(36,527 posts)I loathed PE. I was a tall gangly girl who was in terrible condition. Instead of encouraging those of us who were not fit, we were ridiculed by the teacher & the fit girls. Made me hate activity of all types. And then I moved to Boulder County & started hiking.
I was simply not terribly coordinated in hitting balls etc.
I loved when they did the short dance units, because I was fairly decent at that and it was fun.
Hated running (I come from people with large chests and weak ankles) and too afraid of heights to manage that rope!

(13,070 posts)In fact, my daughter and I loaded the app on our phones and walked downtown. At one point, there was a particularly fruitful location where more and more people showed up. It was pretty funny. Strangers would be walking down the street telling--shouting--that an "Evey" was near by. Which is apparently a popular Pokemon. We walked for about three hours, until the phones' batteries died! it was fun, and it was hysterical to see how many people were involved.
It is also amazing to think of the work that went into creating this game...for every location in the world. In our little city, there were landmarks we had to visit and popular locations that were highlighted. I am very impressed.

(12,132 posts)but my daughter yelled at me when I suggested such a thing.
There's a park less than a mile from my house. I've lived here for thirty years and never been in that park. But there's a training center and pokestop there. Guess I'm going to the park.

(8,733 posts)True story, my younger son (teenager) and I were walking around downtown and this very down and out homeless person ask us if we are playing PGo and I said "yes" and we proceeded into this 10 minute conversation in which he laid out all the places he knew people were going to to get and ended it by saying "if you want to know where they are you have to ask the people with the eyes and ears on the street"
Simply amazing! 😄

Pokémon Go: armed robbers use mobile game to lure players into trap
Armed robbers used the game Pokémon Go to lure victims to an isolated trap in Missouri, police reported on Sunday.
At about 2am in OFallon, Missouri, officers responded to a robbery report that led them to four people, all local residents aged 16 to 18, in a black BMW in a CVS parking lot. The occupants tried to discard a handgun out of the car when an officer approached, said Sgt Bill Stringer. The officer then identified the four people as suspects of similar armed robberies described in St Louis and St Charles counties.
The adult suspects were charged with first degree robbery, a felony, and had bond set at $100,000 cash, Stringer said.
Stringer added that police believe the suspects used the phone app, which directs users to capture imaginary creatures superimposed onto the real world, to tempt players into secluded areas where they could be easily robbed. At a certain level in the game, he noted, players can congregate at local landmarks to join teams and battle.

I think it's great. People are getting outside that's always a good thing. I was reading that it's helping people that have some depression and social anxiety.

(8,733 posts)I have been playing this game with my kids since early Saturday and been all over the place and I can assure you that you do not need to go down back alleys or go into fenced off areas or people's yards to capture a Pokemon.
They are always in populated, public areas. Play smart and take some time to enjoy your surroundings.
