60% of Japan’s households feeling financial hardship

Over 60 percent of households across Japan found themselves facing financial difficulties last year, according to a government survey.

The proportion stood at 60.3 percent as of July 2015, the fourth-highest level since the survey started in 1986, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry said Tuesday.

The highest rate was 62.4 percent in 2014.

The proportion of households having “severe difficulty” was at 27.4 percent, while 32.9 percent said their financial conditions are “somewhat difficult.”

Slightly less than 36 percent said their living conditions are “normal.” The percentage of households that said they are “somewhat well off” came to 3.2 percent, and 0.5 percent said they are “very well off.”
