My father used to tell this story from time to time. When I brought my Grade 1 class picture home, my father noticed a face that was not like the others. Thinking that this boy might be the first non-white child I had ever encountered, (Vancouver was incredibly white in those days) he wondered what my take was.

Their children, then parents, my neighbors as far as one could see, showed up at the high school they threw me in, back in 1971. They incited their kids to violence, beating and stoning the black kids who had shown up on buses. The kids had to retreat to the DQ across the street and the police and fire rescued them. Went on for a few days, the hate went on up until I took off in the Spring of the next year to join the Navy, and presumably after.

Back then we actively intervened in people's awareness, and there was some measurable progress, but the trend toward individualism of the past 40 years or so has killed that. Such things, and their funding, have fallen out of favor. I guess people think racism and hate will just cure themselves, but left alone most cancers spread. Hate does that too.

It's amazing what we have thrown away, and are throwing away, as human resources. I don't know if we will last that much longer as a nation, but maybe that's not so bad.

I am a child of the the 50s and 60s deep south. The first time that I ever really got to know diversity was when I joined the Navy and went to Boot Camp. The only color allowed was recruit. We had to operate as a team to get through and graduate. I value that experience and think that if we had a national policy of service, not just the military, for all people when they reach 18 then maybe we could have some hope for the future. Otherwise, I don't know how we counter the hate that this young women experienced. These toxic people will just pass it on to their children and grandchildren.

It's easy to feel like we haven't but even 20 years ago we wouldn't have elected someone like Obama. 20 years ago a guys like Corey Booker, Tom Perez and Julian Castro wouldn't be plausible VP selections.

I've lived in some of the whitest, Wonder Bread commercial areas in the country. From literally the last exit south of Canada in rural NY to the tonier suburbs of St Paul to outside Lincoln NE where the only young black men in evidence generally play for the Huskers (slight exaggeration, but not by much.) Places far less cosmopolitan or diverse than San Antonio, and even in those places anyone that got that exercised about seeing a random black face would soon be either arrested, put firmly in their place, or die of a heart attack from apoplexy. San Antonio may not have the black pop. ratio of Baltimore, but come on, how unliklely is it that this gooberess is all that shocked and horrified to come across black people in a Church's in a city that's 7% or so black?

People will be assholes unfortunately, regardless of why they decide to unleash a given strain of assholery.

The fantasy of such racists is that their ancestors were plantation owners like in "Gone with the Wind." Though a tad beaten after that whole confederate flag brouhaha, the plantation romance of the old south is not, alas, dead. Not yet.

In my studying my family tree I had my DNA tested at Ancestry.com . My paternal ancestors came from the West Indies and many of the matches listed in the results had African ancestry. When I researched further back I found that my 4th great- grandfather had owned many slaves back in the early 1800's. I had had no idea. So the only conclusion that I could draw was that somebody back then was fooling around with the help. I went to a database of slaves registered in the Caribbean where you can see the names and descriptions of slaves who are registered as property. At least the British freed their slaves without having to resort to a Civil War and its aftermath.

Later generations in my family lost most of their wealth. My great-grandmother emigrated to the US in 1916 after she was left a widow at age 36 with 8 children and no means to support them. She went to work in NYC and was eventually able to bring all of them to the US where they settled and eventually became citizens. She was a strong woman and an inspiration.

I agree that children have to be taught to hate a particular group or religion. We should all be judged as individuals based on our character and actions.

Many an African American could shoot back, "My family did, too..." as, alas, the slave owner's DNA was frequently as much a part of the family history as that of the slaves...as the book "Roots" famously attests.

Apparently the girl was upset, in a low-key way, that she was told to be respectful. And objected to being insulted, so went over with her family to pick a fight.

No, we don't see the beginning. But we can probably assume that it started not at the black family's table but between the girl and the white family, over where they were sitting.

Now, what prompted her to say they told her to be respectful? She didn't start off saying they called her names.

From what I saw in the video, I don't blame the white couple for getting upset with the black family, but there racist bullshit was inexcusable. It really showed their ignorance that they couldn't have an argument without resorting to that racist crap.

In what I see here, I see no innocent parties.

I felt like something might have occurred between the girl and the white family when the girl was away from her family's table. She came back to the table and relayed to her mother what had happened. Then the mother of the black family went over. That's my impression, but it's really not factually supported by the video.

In no way do I condone EITHER side here. This could have escalated to a much more dangerous level very quickly if other patrons of the restaurant had decided to become involved. I would hope that the management of the restaurant had already been on the phone to police when they saw this happening. I know if I'd been in the restaurant at that time, I would have felt very threatened because of the actions of both sides.

I live in San Antonio, too, and I've never heard of a Chester's Chicken. We have Chester's Hamburgers. I assume that's a simple misprint.

1) Serfdom is not slavery, it is closer to the more modern phenomenon of sharecropping, another abuse heaped upon black Americans.

2) Serfdom started disappearing in Western Europe in the 1300s, and only affected those in rural settings, not urban dwellers at all. To say all whites are descended from serfs is simply false. NONE of the early immigrants to the US were refugees from serfdom.
