A few months ago, when confronted about running an ad that depicted President Obama discussing the economy when he was actually quoting John McCain Mitt Romney said, Whats sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. I have previously suggested that the ability to disconnect words from authorship has made changing positions even easier for Romney.
But this pattern of lying and not acknowledging it, even when confronted directly, has persisted and led me to look for other sources of Romneys behavior and of his clear comfort with continuing it. I think much of this comfort stems from his Mormon faith.

(37,162 posts)Don't know if it is actually what is going on with Romney (an alternative view would be it's his old Bain schtick: say whatever you need to to get inside the door, then once you're in loot the place).
Where I have seen this before is with Creationists.

(11,746 posts)He doesn't think it's Mormonism either. He thinks Romney is a sociopath, albeit a high functioning one. Thom points out correctly that the same cognitive dissonance can be found in every religion.
I confess that I posted this more in order to post something pointing out that Mitt Romney is in fact a liar, because Mitt Romney is in fact a liar.
Whats sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. he's suggesting that Obama is lying about him, so it's justified for him to lie...the only thing about that is...Obama isn't lying, so his justification, however juvenile it is, is just wrong. I don't think it has anything to do with his faith or just seeing things differently skewing the real truth into what he sees as truth. I think HE KNOWS HE'S LYING AND SIMPLY DOESN'T CARE.
And the next time he uses that damn sauce for the gander bull crap, I wish one of the pundits would just ask when Obama lied therefore giving his statement some actual meaning.

(11,746 posts)One can't know for sure of course.
Does a sociopath know that they are lying?

(5,477 posts)He just doesn't see any reason not to lie.

(11,746 posts)Lying is a slippery slope. The sociopath has rationalized their lying. I think it's true that somewhere they know they lie, but as a sociopath with no empathy they have convinced their self that they are the only one that matters.
How can you tell a lie to one that does not matter?
The sociopath is a sick person.

(15,682 posts)For the life of me I couldn't understand what he (Romney) meant. His "sauce for the goose" made no sense until now (that you've explained it). I thought he was trying to use it to say he wasn't lying and it just didn't work for me no matter how hard I tried to spin it.
Thanks for enlightening me. It makes perfect sense now. Yeah, I know, I know. I'm slow.

(11,364 posts)... in a "folksy" metaphor for this very reason. A large number of people won't quite parse his meaning, and, should somebody call him out on it, he can insist that this was not what he meant, even though there is no other meaning.
He's a particularly slimy salesman, isn't he?

(15,682 posts)I didn't expect him to justify his lie. The worst I expected was for him to deny it.

(4,033 posts)I have never heard of "what's SAUCE for the goose is SAUCE for the gander". I have only heard "what's good for the goose is good for the gander".

(37,162 posts)It's an older version, but not all that old. I've heard that version in 1982.

(4,340 posts)My brother married into Mormonism and spouts all the Mormon nonsense. I'm not sure if he actually believes the stuff, or is just lying to himself. I suppose that makes a difference.

(10,584 posts)another day another bigoted article. My family is LDS and the notion that they are comfortable lying because they rely on their faith when answers don't fit makes them lier is appalling and bigoted. All faiths do this.

(11,746 posts)I have heard that The Noble Lie is part of the LDS theology. Of course they did not invent that idea.
Personally I have a problem with any fundamentalist of any faith.
