A HERETIC I AM

I'm watching, for probably the fourth time, the HBO series "Deadwood". It's a Republican wet dream.

Seriously.

It seems to me that most of the right leaning people I talk to really and truly yearn for the days of the essentially lawless old west.

If you got sick? Fuck you. You either had enough to pay the local Doc straight out, or you stayed at home and suffered.

Taxes? WHAT THE HELL ARE THOSE!?! Of course you had to put up with dirt streets pockmarked with mud puddles full of horse piss,, no proper drainage, no building codes, no restrictions on what you threw into the only water supply for miles, but WHO GIVES A FUCK! WE'RE FREE!! right?

Need to take a poop or a piss? Just dig yourself a hole, put a small building over it and voila!

Want to own a gun ? No prob. Whether or not you are a nut case will be sorted out in the street when you open fire, because everyone else is carrying too.

Anticipating a legal challenge of some sort? Don't worry too much. The case will be heard in the local saloon by a court set up a day or so before.

Ahhhh...yes....the old west. As soon as civilization shows it's ugly head, just move further into the wilderness. Now THAT'S freedom!

Too many strike me as simply unwilling to pay taxes to live in a civilized society. Most of the Republicans I talk to are very narrowly focused, in that they just simply HATE the idea that there is someone in need their tax dollars might help. They either detest the social safety net or are rabidly anti choice or rabidly pro-2nd ammendment, but I find it doesnt very often go much deeper than that.

So.....let's cut off a chunk of Nevada, Utah, Montana, Wyoming and Arizona for them to live in a world of No Name City's and Deadwoods and leave the rest to those of us who actually give a fuck about our fellow man

And the part he played in GOT was fascinating also.

But thanks for the diversion from the point!

Really, they do.

They just want other people to pay for it.

Is that it shows an authentic view of life it the old west.

You know, the old west were people got to rid horses, drink in saloons, wear cool cloths, oh yeah - "open carry" cool looking 6 shooters.

Probably super realistic cross section of people - you know the ones with money and power. Not the dirt farmers or majority of people who tried to scrape out a living and died young from either disease, exhaustion, or addiction.

to be a town and is poised to be absorbed into governed territory. About rule of force becoming rule of law. Chaos becoming order.
Many of the characters are actual historical figures from the true history of Deadwood, McShane's character was an actual person for example. A notorious person.
Major characters in the show include Chinese immigrants, prostitutes, flat broke and sick people, addicts, gamblers, a pioneer Jew, a black business owner and so forth. Not all about those with money and power. Far more about those trying to get money and escape established powers.

It was subtle, well-acted, and amazing in showing the way
a society moves from social darwinism to a functioning, caring nexus.
