Why the Russian hacking story is so important in this campaign?

As far as I can tell, this is the first time that Donald Trump has backtracked on anything he has said, and he has said some terrible shit. This is significant in itself.

Somebody must have told him that he really stepped in it this time and he should go out and explain that it was just "sarcasm", just like Newt Gingrich said...

He is a treasonous bastard and the Democrats should not let him forget it. His son, Donald, Jr, said that a "disproportionate" number of their investments were with the Russians. This is a conflict of interest that threatens our national security.

Since Trump has been denied credit by almost every bank in America, the Russians are very important to the Trump business interests. He is a flashing mark as a potential blackmail target.

This is no small deal.

These are two dots most Americans can connect if they are pounded over the head with it.

Have the personal emails Hillary deleted from her private server, he's so sure she was hiding something, that releasing them would be bad for her.

Of course the server wasn't hacked at all. So not sure what he's going on about.
