elected to office. Oregon has two Democratic Senators and 4 out of 5 House Seats. State House, Democratic, Governor, a Democrat. Our delegation does that for this country year in and year out. Our Primary is a closed Primary.

rewarded. Those who were behaving badly have only themselves - and anyone who tacitly supported their actions - to blame.

The shame is that actions of a FEW harmed ALL in the delegation.

Too many who hold Clinton to impossible standards do not even meet the most basic standards themselves.

And the rest of the voters in my state. Dissent should not be silenced. I understand that many wanted a scripted theater performance, rather than honest democracy, which includes dissent, and puts the lie to the myth of unity they were trying to portray. I kept hearing that we were supposed to leave the convention unified; or, at least, more unified that we were at the beginning. The silencing of the dissent feeds the anger and begets more dissent. I think we're less unified now.

Make no mistake; I believe that there is unity in the determination to defeat Trump. Beyond that, there remain some very deep divisions. Those divisions are evident right here at DU, and are much more obvious outside of DU and that convention hall, where the discussion is censored.

And I notice the parsed your word...Determination to defeat Trump. So you believe there is unity to support Hillary, including your vote?

And I do not believe for a minute that all the folks representing you are with our team. How do I know? I saw one crazy delegate from Oregon interviewed. She wore one of those lime green shirts and proudly stated she was voting for and supporting Stein. Is she representing you? She had the nerve to become a delegate to the Democratic Convention supporting Sanders, ignore his instructions to support Hillary and then go on national TV and support one of our opponents. And you know as well as I do she was not an exception. Few of those assholes wearing green shirts and raising hell, even when the Muslim parents of a war hero were talking, are planning on supporting our candidate.

I am on this site because I want a place to communicate with other supporters of the Democratic Party. I have seen those site outside of DU and they are pretty much the same as FR. I may read them, but this is my home.

Since you are posting here I am assuming you are supporting the Democratic Party candidate. But the people representing you at the Convention really showed their asses and you defend them at your own risk.

I have no animus toward you, but it really pissed me off to see a Democratic Delegate from your great state comment on national television that she is supporting the green part candidate.

We need closed primaries and an end to caucuses.

Have a nice weekend.

I'm guessing that a lot of them are too young to know the sense of despair, horror and dismay that we felt when W was elected the second time. The first time was bad enough, but the second time was horrific. I would almost wish that experience on them if there wasn't so much at stake. We've been there and we wanted to enjoy this convention and it infuriates me that instead of enjoying each speech, I sat on pins and needles worrying that they were going to ruin it for us.

It was completely selfish, and it was disrespectful to the people that aren't normally political but were willing to put themselves out there to try to help us.

A lot of these people are also probably too young and ignorant to know that the reason that Hillary has been so disparaged and vilified over the years was because she tried to get universal healthcare passed 25 years ago and failed and they're lapping up all of the right wing vilifications and talking points that helped defeat her then.

I don't like that they had to take a nationalistic slant, but it was necessary in order to drown out the people that were doing their best to portray our party as being made up of people that only think in black and white just like the right wingers. That will turn off a lot of voters and help Trump get elected and I don't want another 4 - 8 years of cringing every time our President speaks and 30 years of an extreme right wing Supreme Court.

This isn't actually my first post but it's been awhile and I couldn't remember my username.

Or, as auntpurl more accurately noted, welcome BACK to DU.

You make a worthy point here. Lots of young people, for whom this may be the very first campaign experience or convention experience, just weren't around when the persecution of Hillary Clinton began. Or they were too young. Well, I'M old! And I remember clearly and maybe even with probably some grudge-holding. I HATE it - how the witch burning has continued. I HATE it when people badmouth her, and condemn her, and spread lies about her and believe the lies that others spread about her, and call her names. I HATE it when my beloved best friend starts spouting what I KNOW are Pox Noise propaganda blurbs against Hillary.

I read one opinion that stated most people who've learned or been schooled by the CONSTANT dumping on Hillary might not even be able to explain why she lied, or why she's corrupt, or why she's "bought and paid for" - it's just what they hear. I've even tried it myself - "lied about WHAT?" "How is she corrupt?" "What do you mean she's corrupt"? and so forth. And they can't come up with specifics. I heard someone describing how they watched her Benghazi testimony and while they found her "masterful" all that long tortured day, "she lied the whole time!" I hollered over - "about what?" They couldn't come up with an answer! They've just heard, over and over and over, "she's a liar" so that's all that's needed, I guess. The programming sure works.

I can fully understand and sympathize with her statements that - yes, she's careful with her words. Yes, she's guarded. Yes, she's not terribly forthcoming, personally. Well, WHO WOULDN'T BE, WHO'S BEEN FREAKIN' PERSECUTED FOR APPROXIMATELY 25 YEARS??????? I'd certainly feel like that! Seems as though there are days when she can't even get out of bed in the morning without being pelted with criticism - for what a shitty way others think she gets out of bed in the morning!!!

I had a mother who was hyper-critical. Found fault with me all the time. It's totally screwed me up, gotta tell you. Fat-shaming for 50-some-odd years will do that to you. Didn't matter how many years I made straight A's, stayed out of trouble, and hung out with fellow nerds who never got in trouble either. I was NEVER quite good enough because I wasn't a size 2. I did have really great hair so I grew it long and had long bangs and I hid under them - and sure enough I got criticized for THAT, too! NOTHING I did was ever good enough. I coulda cured cancer and I STILL wouldn't be good enough. My mother even told me as much, from her hospital bed one day, when I asked her "Mom, can't you just accept me the way I am?" And she told me the truth - "No. I can't." I had a feeling that's what she'd say. And as the Rude Pundit would put it, "well, fuck us all with a surprise stick."

Hmmm... guess I identify too personally with Hillary. But well, there you are. Guilty as charged. But seriously. I TOTALLY get why she's guarded. She has a good reason to be that way. I would be, too. I only had my mother criticizing me all the doggone time. Hillary has LEGIONS of people, from every quarter - public and private/pro and non-pro criticizing her all the time. And I'll always give her the benefit of the doubt.

38. Parents...
Sat Jul 30, 2016, 01:01 PM

Ugh!! I can relate. Mine are complete right wingers and both are misogynistic. I un-friended them on FB a long time ago but every now and then I take a peek to see if they've changed at all, and sure enough they had the picture of Hillary standing in front of the country sign that looked like it spelled c_nt. I also saw a lot of postings about Moochelle Obama and some commenting about how she should be sitting on a porch eating watermelon. My dad was in the Air Force for 30 years and his FB picture is of him in uniform and the person commenting was also shown in uniform and I was so incredibly disgusted. It sucks to be disgusted by your parents!

My Mom was nurturing to my brother but either ignored me and my sister or in my sisters case, was very verbally abusive, so when I saw the Hillary picture, it made perfect sense since she's as misogynistic as my father. I got in an argument with him shortly after Kerry lost the election and he was going on and on about how much of a hero Bush was and how much of a traitor Kerry was and he'd only gotten a scratch on his ass in Vietnam, etc. I lost it and said something I shouldn't have - that I hated Bush and wished somebody would just take him out. He called me a stupid f'ing c_unt several times and I packed up and left. So, again, I wasn't surprised to see the Hillary picture, since that appears to be one of his favorite words to call a woman - even his own daughter.

People often say that you shouldn't let politics affect familial relationships, but to me it's not just politics, it's ideology and how you think and what you believe and anybody who is completely on board with Trump, isn't somebody I want to spend time with.

So, families can be a struggle and like many people say, sometimes you just have to build your own family! And we can spend our whole lives trying to undo the damage done. I've had to do a lot of work to get where I'm at, and unfortunately it's meant having a very limited relationship with my parents.

Thank you for sharing your story!!!

I heard one of my new heroes, Steve Schwartz, talk about Trump last night on Lawrence O'Donnell's show. Steve Schwartz is the ghost-writer of "The Art of the Deal," and had months of up-close-'n'-personal exposure to Trump while struggling to put together the book he was paid to do for the guy. He gained a unique understanding of his subject, for sure. Described Trump as a very "damaged" human being. A "black hole," who lives only to get attention and then more attention, and then still MORE attention. Or as my husband puts it - "more ME, please!" Although in Trump's case, I'd probably have to adjust that to "more ME, DAMMIT!"

THANK YOU so much for sharing your story. I just so resonate with that, even though in my case, the "c" word never did come up. We're all damaged human beings, I think. To one extent or other. But the damage can come from anywhere else, as well as within one's own self, it seems. Those of us who are lucky enough NOT to have been damaged by our own damaged parental units will inevitably suffer some, elsewhere along the way, unfortunately. I don't think ANYBODY gets out of here undamaged.

I sometimes ponder my very strange character of a father. The people I refer to as my parents aren't my biological parents. So in some ways I'm quite grateful to them. They tried. I believe they really did try. But MAN they were damaged in their youth. My dad was quite the sexist but I now realize that he was really conflicted in my case. I guess having a daughter will do that to ya. He wanted me to be strong and independent, and in some ways a female version of himself. But it seriously perplexed and confused him the way I turned out because they raised me to be that way but he wasn't comfortable with the result. I think it's kinda like - "be careful what you wish for, because you might get it."

It used to infuriate me how he'd gape at women. In front of my MOTHER he'd gape at other women. Surrounded himself with - um - my mom referred to them as "beavers." (Took me awhile to realize what else that word meant...) He worked in a sales business that, at one point, employed models. And he'd ogle them shamelessly. I sometimes felt as though I should buy him some bibs for Christmas. Really embarrassing. A mini-Trump-type. A salesman. A smooth talker. VERY adept at manipulating people with words. When I first discovered Donald Trump, he reminded me of my own dad (although with RIDICULOUSLY more money than my dad had - they weren't even in the same proverbial galaxy). But as I'd listen to Trump, then AND especially now, I'd think - "SHIT. This is blowing my mind. I KNOW this guy." Hell, sometimes it feels like I grew up with him, albeit with exponentially less in the financial department.
