House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has been more aggressive, leaking the entire text of the draft intellectual property chapter to the public on his website. Although the document had previously been available over the internet through legally dubious channels, Issa's posting was viewed as a political shot across the bow.

Obama Trade Document Leaked, Revealing New Corporate Powers And Broken Campaign Promises

"Bush was better than Obama on this," said Judit Rius, U.S. manager of Doctors Without Borders Access to Medicines Campaign, referring to the medication rules. "It's pathetic, but it is what it is. The world's upside-down."
In a statement provided to HuffPost, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative downplayed the concerns.
"This administration is committed to ensuring strong environmental, public health and safety laws," said USTR spokesperson Nkenge Harmon. "Nothing in our TPP investment proposal could impair our government's ability to pursue legitimate, non-discriminatory public interest regulation, including measures to protect public health, public safety and the environment."

Trans-Pacific negotiations have been taking place throughout the Obama presidency. The deal is strongly supported by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the top lobbying group for American corporations. Obama's Republican opponent in the 2012 presidential elections, Mitt Romney, has urged the U.S. to finalize the deal as soon as possible.
This post has been updated to include comment from the USTR and the Sierra Club.

Issa certainly didn't do this to right a wrong.

(706 posts)someone I agree with 6/10 times than someone who I would have only a 1/1,000,000 chance of agreeing with. The main thing that pisses me off about the Obama admin is their record on civil liberties that's where the 40% disagreement comes from.

You think people on the left will switch to Romney? Makes no sense. He is the biggest TPPA supporter of all.

(116,464 posts)A leak of a draft document by Issa is designed to do just that.
"You think people on the left will switch to Romney? Makes no sense. He is the biggest TPPA supporter of all."
You're right, that makes no sense. Doesn't that make you wonder why Issa leaked the information? Are people really confident that Issa's leak isn't selective data?
The Republican goal of pissing people off is to depress Democratic turnout, not to gain votes for Romney.

(20,441 posts)There should be a system of differential tariffs in place with the goal of attempting, to the best of our ability, to equalize labor costs across borders. Rather than racing to the bottom in terms of trying to pay the cheapest wages for a given product, there should be competition on who can produce the product with the most quality.
If we don't do this, we'll end up in a situation where a military dictatorship with no labor protections, no environmental protections, and weak or inconsistent enforcement of pay and wage laws makes our products. Oh ... wait!

It allows Issa and his enablers to hype a mundane document (draft with routine language that can be easily misconstrued).
I mean, think about the premise: Obama will allow multinational corps to subvert U.S. laws.
This is the President who is busy enforcing trade laws.
