Charles Pierce: For The Good Of the Nation, The Republican Party has to die.

Are You Ready for the End of the Republican Party?
It's been a long, a long time coming...

................

Modern conservatism has proven to be not a philosophy, but a huge dose of badly manufactured absinthe. It squats in an intellectual hovel now, waiting for its next fix, while a public madman filches its tattered banner and runs around wiping his ass with it. It always was coming to this.

FOR THE GOOD OF THE NATION, THE REPUBLICAN PARTY AS IT IS PRESENTLY CONSTITUTED HAS TO DIE.

There have been three chances since 2000 for the Democratic Party to beat the crazy out of the Republicans. The first was after the thumping that the Avignon Presidency received in the 2006 midterms. The second was immediately after the election of Barack Obama. Both of those went a'glimmering because the Democrats listened to people who convinced them that, because they were the grown-up governing party, they had to make nice with the pack of vandals on the other side of the aisle. Even this president bought this line of argument, until it became obvious to him that the prion disease was too far gone.

Ever since he looked deeply into that big back of fcks and discovered that it had been empty for a while, the president obviously determined to keep proposing sensible measures even though he knows the Congressional majorities will decline to do even the minimal work required of them by the Constitution. My god, they won't even come back into session to address the Zika epidemic that is now breaking out in Florida. Merrick Garland is sipping a cool one on the veranda somewhere, waiting for someone to tell him where he'll be working come winter. The president is not budging. Why should he? He's not the crazy one. He doesn't belong to the party that, with its eyes wide open, nominated a vulgar talking yam for president.

It long has been the duty of the Democratic Party to the nation to beat the crazy out of the Republican Party until it no longer behaves like a lunatic asylum. The opportunity to do this, to act unilaterally in returning sanity to the Republic, never has been as wide and gleaming as it is right now. To argue that responsible government requires that you treat sensibly a party that has gone as mad as the Republicans have is to argue for government by delirium.

Trump doesn't need an intervention. His party does.

Still, I wonder what would rise up in its place ... much would depend on what we, as Democrats, decide we stand for.

If we continue to come out strong for a personal freedom agenda, folding LGBT equality and reproductive choice into a broad philosophical commitment that includes ending the drug war, legalizing cannabis, and promoting the freedom of consenting adults to make their own decisions about what to read, watch, do with their own bodies and the right of terminally ill people to have a dignified exit on their own terms-- then I think any nascent danger that the Libertarians would rise up to replace the GOP would be neutralized.

Probably you would end up with a crippled GOP comprising ever-dwindling numbers of religious fundamentalists, xenophobes and ayn rand types.

I remember when the GOP was "imploding" back in 2006 and 2008. This may just end up being the death throes of the Tea Party and the return of the Republicans back to their regular, 1970/1980s selves, or Trump could be so unpopular he ends up becoming the catalyst for third party viability in federal elections.

We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

quite the opposite of what people predict.

Either the party moves towards the center, or they retreat further to their end of the spectrum. It's hard to tell which will happen here. Our party hasn't moved that much on social issues, but we have moved right on economics and foreign policy.

My prediction for the Republicans is that they put on the same empty suit, but with a different label. Reaganism transformed into conservatism, which transformed into the tea party.

Now they're looking for a new name for their bad ideas.

If Drumpf hadn't come along with his star power, I sincerely doubt they'd have been able to field a candidate this year, judging from the selection they had on stage at their debates.

The devils they made deals with in the late 60s and again in 1980 have finally taken over. The Old Guard completely abandoned their own convention and are now in complete disarray as they decide whether or not to back the maniac chosen by a mob.

The Hamiltonian parties in this country are stable only while they stay relatively small. Once they start to court voting blocs they think are malleable, it's all over, they destabilize the party completely.

The Republicans will thus join the Federalists and the Whigs, sputtering on as a regional party until the next Hamiltonian party takes shape. Maybe their next party will catch a clue and stay small and stable. Probably not.

Rmoney failure in the last Presidential election. Not enough coffee in me to recall what the name they gave to that introspection, but they really should have listened to it! I cannot recall most of their conclusions, but it involved a minority outreach to try and diversify their Party. Boy did they go the other way on that one!

Hillary does not do what she has tried in the past, and try to build a bridge. I understand she had good reasons before, but when we wins, the GOP and their Billionaires will already be prepared. No, they do nto care if they have to wreck the country, because they want to make what THEY think it should be, and they will not stop until an army of "lone gunmen" does their bidding.

Conservatism became a quasi religion that hardened its orthodoxy and purged the heretics. But to win elections they had to have as many people as possible worked into a froth over what the Democrats were likely to do like nudge up the top tax rate by a few percentage points or regulate some industry. You can have a political party and movement that is all about and only about helping the rich, but you can't use that message in your mass appeal, you need a blunt instrument like Fox news, and you wind up with what we have today.

The worked up into a froth part worked great, but now the unruly mobs have gone off message leaving the party wondering what to do next.

Half the country is conservative, philosophically. Those voters are going to go somewhere. A lot of them will start voting for moderate or conservative Democrats. Enough of them win and it will pull the Democrat platform away from the left. You'll end up with a centrist super-party that Wall Street would have no trouble controlling.
