I got out my Grampa's Colt .45 1911 today

Each summer I get it out and run a clip through it. Then I clean it, oil it, wrap it in cloth and put it up until it needs attention again. But this time was different. As I held the hunk of steel that went ashore at Utah beach and reeled in the Ardennes until the weather cleared, I really got to thinking about my grandpa and the hell he endured

I think of the time he told me of the time they were advancing and came under fire....a German artillery shell exploded behind of him in the road. A piece of shrapnel scalped him and as he swept the skin and hair back to clear his vision, he saw a soldier in front of him on his hands and knees. When the GI looked back at him my grampa saw that half of his face was gone. Gone to the bloody bone. He said the the randomness of who would die was the worst part.

Gramps went home after that and got a scar the would screw up his haircut for the rest of his life. We buried him with his ribbons and his Purple Heart.

So to see this Trump punk somehow suggesting that he should somehow have a PH really pisses me off to no end.

Fuck you Trump. Fuck you in the arse with a giant rubber cock. And then break it off and beat you to death with the stump.

If hate was people, I would be China.

But I am keeping Gramp's gat.

I loved reading it. Those of us who have never fought a war can't quite understand that war really is hell. , I'm glad that people who have, have shared their stories. It's really important. When someone who has evaded service is so glib about something like earning a Purple Heart, it is enraging. Especially in light of his wanting to wipe out all the sacrifices made by people like your Gramps.

... it tends not to be appreciated so much by those who have not diced with Death.

George MacDonald Fraser tells of an advance his squad made against the Japanese in the waning days of the war. A 75mm artillery shell exploded right in the face of one of his squad mates, but freakishly left the man completely unharmed, while killing those to his right and left. It's almost enough to give a man religion.

Was a medic in the second wave at Omaha. Got a silver star in the following days. Made it to Hurtgen. Had a mental breakdown when a medic friend of his went in the opposite direction he did during a bombardment and disappeared. My understanding after multiple explanations came to the conclusion his friend disintegrated during the tree level airbursts during that engagement. My F-in-Law spent 6 months immediately following this event in a hospital in England.

His assessment of Trump is much the same as yours. Refers to him as a "pampered candy ass." He's a very old man now but I'll wager he could still operate that 1911 with competence.

Fuck Trump indeed.

I do not support any form of violence as a solution. It does not matter the source. This is not the solution.

More violence does not promote peaceful outcomes, imo.

The world was facing a great evil. Sometimes you have to fight. I agree that things should never descend to violence in a perfect world. This is not a perfect world. And until it is, all good men are obliged to push back against the darkness.

...but not as rough as the grunts had it. We had some perks, we could carry extra rations (C-rats in those days), plenty of clean water, dry clean clothes and occasionally a beer or two.

I know what you mean about those thank you's. I hear that out of some peoples mouths and I just want to punch them in the teeth. It seems so insincere much like saying "god bless you" after someone sneezes. In the right context though, like this thread, it is appreciated.

We all owe a great debt of thanks to the greatest generation. My Dad, one of his brothers and a cousin and my Mom's brother and two of her cousins and her brother-in-law all saw action in WWII.

I wish I could give more details about my papaw. I was 13 when he died so it is getting a little dim. Dad and grandma are gone also so all I have are decades old memories of a man that told a kid a horrific story, perhaps in the hope that our generation would do better. Sorry papaw.
