For sheer emotional release at a funeral memorial, I can not imagine any music better than Barber's Adagio for Strings
""
I must have S. Mclachlan on the mind today...
consider also:

Heavens, I know there are so many good choices... I'll be interested to see what others suggest.

(42,770 posts)joyful remembrance....But, think I can't go too somber or too upbeat. Like a mellow, happy?? Hard to describe.

(1,136 posts)I would add:
Norah Jones - Come Away with Me
James Taylor - You can close your eyes & Fire and Rain
And, that version by the Hawaiian man, can't remember his name at the moment...but his version of Somewhere over the rainbow.

(42,770 posts)Purest, most beautiful voice in my opinion. Eva Cassidy...lots out there - but sadly, she died of a brain tumor

(18,402 posts)I wanted to post the Chet Baker vocal version of this touching song, but couldn't find it. It's the best. But also poignant is the Annie Lennox version. (The child in the home movies in this video was an acquaintance of ours who died of AIDS some years ago. But it's not a song about HIV: it's a standard that's been sung across the decades by Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole and many others.)
And here's one I wouldn't mind being played at my own memorial. Don't know why. It is just very spiritual to me:

(10,129 posts)We listen to the tales and romanticize,
how we follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun,
How we'll rise to the height of our halo.
Listen to the tales as we all rationalize,
our way into the arms of the savior.
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations.
None of us have actually been there,
Not like you...
Ignorant siblings in the congregation.
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me...
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.
But enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who illuminated?
Your little piece of the divine.
And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me
I'm gonna let it shine
to guide you safely on your way.
Your way home...
Oh, what are they gonna do when the lights go down?
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they gonna do when the rivers overrun?
Other than tremble incessantly.
High is the way,
but our eyes are upon the ground.
You are the light and the way.
They'll only read about.
I only pray heaven knows,
when to lift you out.
10,000 days in the fire is long enough.
You're going home...
You're the only one who can hold your head up high.
Shake your fist at the gates saying,
"I have come home now...!"
Fetch me the spirit, the son and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
"It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my
Give me my wings...!"
Give me my [x5]
(Give me my wings)
You are the light, the way,
that they will only read about.
Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance.
Burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.
Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion.
Should you see your maker's face tonight,
Look him in the eye.
Look him in the eye and tell him,
I never lived a lie, never took a life,
But surely saved one.
Hallelujah
It's time for you to bring me home.

(10,129 posts)and, condolences, as well...
That song was written for his late, long-suffering but extremely devout mother. If there is a better lyricist in music these days then Maynard James Keenan, I've yet to hear of them.

[Verse 1]
You saw my pain, washed out in the rain
And broken glass saw the blood run from my veins
But you saw no fault, no cracks in my heart
And you knelt beside my hope torn apart
But the ghosts that we knew will flicker from view
And we'll live a long life
[Chorus]
So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light
Cause oh they gave me such a fright
But I will hold as long as you like (with all of my might)
Just promise me we'll be all right
[Verse 2]
So lead me back
Turn south from that place
And close my eyes to my recent disgrace
Cause you know my call
And we'll share my all
And our children come and they will hear me roar
[Chorus]
So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light
Cause oh they gave me such a fright
But I will hold as long as you like (with all of my might)
Just promise me we'll be all right
[Bridge]
But hold me still
Bury my heart on the coals (next to yours)
And hold me still
Bury my heart on the coals (next to yours)
[Chorus]
So give me hope in the darkness that I will see the light
Cause oh they gave me such a fright
But I will hold as long as you like (with all my might)
Just promise me we'll be all right
[Outro]
(Ghosts that we knew made us black and all blue
But we'll live a long life)
And the ghosts that we knew will flicker from view
And we'll live a long life
I'm sorry for your loss.

I've already selected this version by Patti as the closer for any future "memorial service" there may be for me.
Fortunately so far, that is not on the radar yet, but I guess you could say I'm workin on it.

(22,990 posts)"Comeback" - Prince Rogers Nelson
Walking up the stairs
Just the afternoon
Sweet wind blew
Not a moment too soon
(Whooo) I cried when I realized
That sweet wind was you
Spirits come and spirits go
Some stick around for the aftershow
Don't have to say I miss you (don't have to say I miss you)
Cause I think you already know
If you ever lose someone
Dear to you
Never say the words "they're gone"
They'll come back.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
They'll come back, yeah yeah
They'll come back
Tears go here
Tears go here
Tears go here
Tears go here

(22,990 posts)"Daisy A Day" - Jud Strunk
He remembers the first time he met her
He remembers the first thing she said
He remembers the first time he held her
And the night that she came to his bed
He remembers her sweet way of singin'
Honey has somethin' gone wrong
He remembers the fun and the teasin'
And the reason he wrote her this song
I'll give you a daisy a day
I'll give you a daisy a day
I'll love you until the rivers run still
And the four winds we know blow away
They would walk down the street in the evenin'
And for years I would see them go by
And their love that was more than the clothes that they wore
Could be seen in the gleam of their eye
As a kid they would take me for candy
And I loved to go taggin' along
We'd hold hands while we walked to the corner
And the old man would sing her his song
I'll give you a daisy a day
I'll give you a daisy a day
I'll love you until the rivers run still
And the four winds we know blow away
Now he walks down the street in the evenin'
And he stops by the old candy store
And I somehow believe he's believin'
He's holdin' her hand like before
For he feels all her love walkin' with him
And he smiles at the things she might say
Then the old man walks up to the hilltop
And gives her a daisy a day
I'll give you a daisy a day
I'll give you a daisy a day
I'll love you until the rivers run still
And the four winds we know blow away

(6,530 posts)My dad had a stroke a while back and I put together a playlist for him-- he'd lost the capacity to produce or understand speech but he'd always loved music so, so much. He died shortly thereafter and we ended up using the playlist at his memorial along with a slideshow of photos. I strongly recommend mixing in songs that will evoke or create happy memories.
Some of my dad's:
Canned Heat-- On the Road again
Sly and the Family Stone-- Everyday People
I think I might have included Dance to the Music too-- dad loved that one:
Stevie Wonder-- Superstition
Also You are the Sunshine of My Life
Robert Palmer Sailing Shoes trilogy
Little Feat-- Fat Man in the Bathtub
Pretty sure I put Dixie Chicken in there, too.
Allmans-- Blue Sky
'
Grateful Dead-- Ripple
Marvin Gaye-- What's Going On
BB King-- The Thrill is Gone
Also Lucille--
Tom Kitten
(7,347 posts)"Swimming To The Other Side" by Pat Humphries. I don't know if this is the definitive version (there are several on youtube) but this one includes the lyrics
Another song I've always loved is "Genesis" by Jorma Kaukonen...
"Time has come for us to pause
And think of living as it was
Into the future we must cross, must cross
I'd like to go with you
And I'd like to go with you
You say I'm harder than a wall
A marble shaft about to fall
I love you dearer than them all, them all
So let me stay with you
So let me stay with you
And as we walked into the day
Skies of blue had turned to grey
I might have not been clear to say, to say
I never looked away
I never looked away
And though I'm feeling you inside
My life is rolling with the tide
I'd like to see it be an open ride
Along with you
Going along with you
The time we borrowed from ourselves
Can't stay within a vaulted well
And living turns into a lender's will
So let me come with you
And let me come with you
And when we came out into view
And there I found myself with you
When breathing felt like something new, new
Along with you
Going along with you"

(90,714 posts)It was beautiful. The readings were all from the deceased's personal translations of the Psalms. The Cantor sang .... but we were all invited to sing Hallelujah, and that's when I cried.
Aside from that, I would recommend playing the Ode to Joy....

Ode to Joy -- Beethoven
Yesterday we were at a memorial service and an abbreviated version of Cohen's Hallelujah was in the order of service for us to sing. That's when I cried.
I don't know if my previous comment ever made it through. I had to switch computers because mine kept crashing this thread.
Condolences and all the best with your playlist.
