The United States has sent the largest delegation of athletes to the Rio Olympics that just had the opening ceremony last Friday.
I thought it was awesome that Michael Phelps carried the flag, he is one of the most decorated Olympic athletes of all time and deserved that honor since I believe this is his 5th olympics.
But what made me really proud is who the Americans had walking in the very front row right near Michael Phelps was Ibtihaj Muhammad, the Muslim-American woman who would be the first woman to wear a hijib on the USA team. Hijib (the head-cover many muslims wear) isn't a common site for many Americans, espeically those out in the suburbs and rural parts of the USA. And with Donald Trump spewing hate against Muslims including Gold Star family members who spoke at the DNC, even saying the word 'Muslims' can bring out the vile in some Americans
But to me, I thought the USA brought out the best and put Ibtihaj Muhammad in the very front row where she could be seen across the globe front and center and to the right of flag-bearer Michael Phelps. To our Olympians, there is no vile hatred towards people of different religions but instead showed that our country does embrace all religions!
For someone to tell me my country isn't great and only a racist, sexist, homophobic douchebag has the power to make it great is just WRONG. Our country is absolutely fabulously great and our Olympians showed us how last great last night at the opening ceremonies!

Good luck to all our Olympians. Ibtihaj Muhammad is a fencer and wish her the best of luck!

(95,337 posts)Since I was a little girl, that was always my favorite part of the Olympics, watching each of the countries enter the stadium in the Opening Ceremonies. When I was younger I would have a globe or atlas nearby and see if I could find the countries! (I'm a geography buff).
I don't have cable TV so I couldn't watch it last night but streaming it this morning was awesome! No commercial breaks (you'd see a 10 second pause where the breaks were). Plus you got to see all the countries. Usually with commercial breaks they would just skip over the countries that entered during the break (usually minor obscure ones).
I'll watch replays of some of the events but in the end I do like Winter better!

(7,906 posts)Since my son was a fencer in college, I have taken an interest in the sport.
She's terrific. I'm definitely going to be rooting hard for her.

(9,353 posts)No snark or anything, I just want to know. How does she swim? She can't wear a hijab in the pool. Does she just wear a regular rubber cap?

(9,353 posts)For some reason I thought somebody said she was a swimmer and I just couldn't figure out how.
In the inimitable words of Roseanne Rosanadana - never mind.

(95,337 posts)At least for Olympic standards since she is a fencer and not a swimmer.
Plus I wouldn't see what the issue would be with a hijab for swimmers. Swimmers wear swim caps anyways and I've seen non-Muslims wear full bodysuits with hoodies on them for competition. Something about making the body more aerodynamic. So if anything a hijab would be a non-issue as long as it's water friendly.
And google hijab swimsuits - very common item.

But as others have said, she plays a dry-land sport.

(14,449 posts)Kicking butt in men's swimming right now. Won gold last night by a wonderful female athlete. However, I can't stand Michael phelps. So many other wonderful Americans who deserved the honor over him.
