Melania Trump told Larry King in an interview in 2005 that she had never been married before her nuptials to Donald Trump, but that doesnt seem to be the whole story. An immigration attorney who works for the Trump Organization, Michael Wildes, who now backs that story, told Univisions investigative unit that Melania had obtained a green card in 2001 based on marriage.
Wildess role in the Trump Organization as an immigration attorney was to ensure the legal entry into the United States of contestants in the Miss Universe pageant as well as models who worked for the Trump Organization. Univision confirms that they were told by Wildes that Melanias green card had been secured on the basis of marriage to a U.S. citizen a full four years before she married the business mogul on January 22, 2005.

(54 posts)To be honest, I'm not too sure about these new allegations about Trump's wife. However, if they are true, it will prove that the Donald is nothing more than a self-serving hypocrite. From his point of view, wouldn't Melania be one of those "terrible" immigrants he's always rambling about? I really hope that the Clinton campaign does its best to point out this discrepancy, and expose Trump's double standards.

He tossed the business-savvy and hard working Ivanna for the young and delightful Marla (who wouldn't put up with his shit, apparently) and then ditched her when she wouldn't "obey." He got himself a trophy mail order bride in poor Melania, but now she's in hot water. After all, she was born way back in 1970 (LOL--boy, I wish I had her birthdate!~) and she's almost a senior citizen at the ripe old age of 46.
Nothing would surprise me with Donald. Including tossing Melania over the side....the guy is an abusive loser who specializes in immature bullying--and I'm quite sure he can be abruptly cruel.
Maybe Melania gets all that botox not to keep the wrinkles at bay, but to prevent those involuntary expressions of utter revulsion when she's around that Orange Ogre???

(81,322 posts)It's truly a case of Look-Who's-Calling-The-Kettle-Black.
The issue of not being honest or trustworthy is one that is being hung around Hillary's neck like a veritable noose. So okay, then. Fine. If they want to harangue on about that, all they do is set the playing field up at THAT level. If they want to make an issue of not honest or trustworthy, then Game On. By All Means. Nice big glass house you two live in. If you're gonna make an issue of it, then so be it.
Besides, I've observed her and her work and what drives her since the 1992 campaign, PLUS quite a bit of reading I've done since from people who worked with her when she was First Lady, Senator, and Secretary of State. The admiration and trust is as thick as the length of the Grand Canyon is wide. Plus there are further testimonials about how, believe it or not, she stacks up as one of the most honest of the bunch (with Donald Trump a finger's length from last place). Both graphs I've seen including one in the NYTimes placed her a notch above Bernie Sanders on the honest/trustworthy scale. Another endorsement comes from a UK Guardian reporter who covered every scandal since Arkansas and imagines the Clintons are never exactly overjoyed to see her when she's on duty, and even she openly concedes that Hillary is outstandingly honest and truthful. The latest such assessment I've seen comes from the Bernie-favoring Mother Jones magazine, which you'd expect to be quick to find fault with everything about her.
For me, that's why I don't go too easy on Melania Trump. I'm very ready to poke fun of her, too, now that she's no longer a noncombatant. Her young son, though? Absolutely a noncombatant. He stays completely out of it. But the grown-ups are out there in public making pronouncements and issues of things and placing themselves on the record, so - fair game.
And, seems to me, sometimes the high-'n'-mighty (or the wannabe high-'n'-mighty) need it. I believe there's obligation that comes with wealth and status. Noblesse oblige. Much blessed, much obligated. I expect more from people at that level of society. Seems to me they owe more. That's what I've always liked about the Kennedy family. That's why I can appreciate the British royals. The recognition that you are public servants. NOT just the haughty narcissist who wins the biggest office and the right to stand behind that fancy seal, just so he can slap it on his golf resorts so he can charge more for everything there. And his wife as well.

(65,408 posts)The South and Southeastern US. (My mom was Scotch-Irish on her mother's side; her father was a Russian Jewish immigrant.)
But my dad's family, who are otherwise wonderful people, are Republicans, as was he. It is part of their "tribal identity," and they probably won't change because it is tribal identity rather than actual political thought that determines their votes--which is the case for most people. It is like identifying with their school sports team or professional sports team, regardless of whether the team wins, regardless of whether the players are nice or nasty members of the community.
And since both in politics and in sports, your team competes agonically with another team, for most people part of that identification involves being riled up against the opponent, who is seen as the "enemy."
I had a student once whose friends and many family members ostracized her for choosing to attend KU because she was from Missouri: KU's longtime sports rival was Missouri. They called the rivalry the "Border Wars," referencing the Civil War conflict the Kansas Jayhawks borrowed their name from.
As they saw it, she was a traitor for going over to the enemy. She had chosen KU because we had the best regional program for her major, but rational considerations did not enter into their assessment, nor did they think she should consider such things. All that mattered to them was being loyal to the "team."
Vile insults and even violence and vandalism are common between such sports tribes, just as they are between political tribes. Before the two schools ended up in different conferences, I used to hear people at KU--even professors and deans--snarl, "I HATE those people!"
The easiest thing for a demagogue to do is to get people to identify excessively and irrationally with a tribe and then rile them up to hate, hate, hate the members of another tribe perceived as opponents.
We see that here during every primary. The vicious attacks on fellow Democrats-liberals-progressives, members of our own tribe, occur because people identify with more narrowly defined tribes within the larger one--IOW, factions. It is especially enlightening to observe the behavior of members who have switched their tribal identification since 2008. Despite vilifying Hillary in the most extreme language 8 years ago, once they changed their tribal identification, they glorified her in similarly extreme terms and similarly vilified any who opposed her. Many of Hillary's tribe didn't just support her, but hated not only Bernie's supporters, but Bernie himself--and some STILL can't let go of their agonic response!
In the same way, many of Bernie's tribe responded to him as an idol rather than as a politician--a good man, surely, just as HRC is a good woman, but NOT a god or a savior any more than Hillary is. As we know all too well, some of Bernie's supporters also cannot let go of their hatred for the other tribe and their rival god, so we still see attacks from a few members of both tribes, while quite a few of the people whose tribe was defeated have left DU altogether.
But although I strongly supported Bernie, I never saw Hillary or her supporters as an enemy tribe, so I have no trouble supporting Hillary in the GE as strongly as I supported Bernie in the primary. I must admit, though, that I was disappointed when DU members whom I have long respected and read with pleasure stooped to hurling the sort of invective at other DU members that one hears from rabid sports fans insulting fans of the opposing team. I was also disgusted to see DU members vilifying Hillary or Bernie in terms appallingly similar to the worst language used by Trump and the GOP generally against Hillary and Obama.
None of our politicians are perfect, but Obama, Hillary, and Bernie at least TRY to move the ball down the field for us, though progress is necessarily incremental when the other team is so powerful and when half or more of our team only show up for a handful of the big plays (and only every four years!).
I know how powerful our instinctive responses are, how difficult to suppress through reason and self control. I just felt sad to see so many here wallow in tribal rage against others in the same tribe, just as my Missouri student's friends and family turned against her for daring to choose KU, the school they consider the enemy. I would LIKE to think the tribe I belong to is capable of being at least somewhat more rational and temperate than the Republican base.

(11,495 posts)If I am not mistaken, they have to be married 5 years to be able to become a citizen. They can get their green card, but have to stay married for the 5 year period to apply for citizenship. If she married Trump four years after she claimed the marriage, then what happened to the husband? If they divorced any time during that 5 year period, she should have lost the green card.
Things may have changed, but I had an ex-sister in law that married a guy from England so he could become a citizen. He paid her a lot of money, and she stayed married for 5 years, even though they did not live together, and she had another boyfriend. That was back in the 70's, so maybe it has changed, but this brings up a lot of questions.

(81,322 posts)It is a name that kinda begs to be played with, 'eh?
But to your point - I'm leaning the same way. As soon as I heard she's 46, I grew nervous for her. She's about at the end of her shelf-life, and her sell-by date is undoubtedly coming soon. I bet he'll only keep her around if, Heaven forbid, he wins.
He sure threw Ivana out awhile ago, after she bore him three children and then had the nerve to start aging. So he started fooling around with Marla Maples (Ivana famously referred to her as Moolah, but maybe it was because Ivana spoke with an accent - she's from the former Czechoslovakia, too, and was also a model when she was younger). I remember when they divorced and she promptly went into seclusion while she had some "work" done. Then she reappeared in public on the cover of Vogue magazine, looking like a major knockout. Revenge is best served with the right nips 'n' tucks in this case, I suppose!
Then when Marla couldn't tie him down, she finally roped him in the old-fashioned way, by getting pregnant, and he married her - for awhile. I'm not sure why he threw her away, but she's remained extremely low-profile ever since. Hers is the daughter named Tiffany, whom you've seen onstage with the Family Trump on various occasions. But she seems to be regarded as an afterthought in the mind of Ivana's kids. At least to Eric Trump, who was on the CBS morning show a few days ago, talking up his wonderful father and referring to how dad was always very good to "the three of us" - meaning himself, brother Donald Junior, and sister Ivanka.
I've seen some great observations all boiling down to "imagine how it would go over if Hillary was sashaying around, showing off her five children from three different men?"
on edit - went and looked up Ivana Trump to find out where in Europe she originated. She's a Czech.
SHIT!!!! Did I ever share about the encounter I had with this gay guy while we were both on jury duty last year? We happened to be sitting next to each other and we started talking. Neither of us ever got called up, so we wound up gabbing and gossiping the entire day! He was freakin' hilarious! Worked as a celebrity female impersonator and one of his impersonations was Ivana Trump! He told me she was in the audience one night and caught his performance. He noticed and saluted her from the stage, and said "There's Ivana Trump! The only Czech The Donald ever bounced!" It got a huge laugh and later when she came backstage to meet him, he apologized but she laughed and said she thought it was very funny.
I never hesitate to accept jury duty. For some strange reason, I ALWAYS wind up having a good time!
But now, knowing more about Donald Trump, I seriously do wonder if Ivana really IS "the only 'check' The Donald ever bounced"...

Assuming they could even agree on a replacement candidate in less than a few days (good luck with that) the replacement won't be on the ballot in at least a few states, or by the end of the month most of them. That would essentially cedes the election to Hillary, and while there's some willingness among real conservative GOPers to do that, there won't be a consensus until it's much too late no matter what the Donald does.
