Gabby Responds to Attacks on Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey

Former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, the Co-Founder of the gun violence prevention organization Americans for Responsible Solutions, release the below statement today following a spate of sexist and homophobic attacks on Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey in response to her steps to help keep guns out of the wrong hands:

The attacks on Attorney General Healey are more than offensive, sexist, and homophobic; they are dangerous. Believe me: This kind of rhetoric fuels hatred, violence, and puts lives at risk. It must stop. In the face of these attacks that have no place in our country, I stand with Maura Healey.

Since I left public office, I have watched with dismay as civility in our politics has eroded and these kinds of irresponsible attacks have become all too common. It is poisonous and a stain on our politics.

The return of civility is essential to the frank, respectful and vigorous public debate that has been our country’s great legacy – and that is our only hope for meeting our shared challenges.

AG faces sexist, antigay slurs after imposing gun ban

What nobody was prepared for was how vile, sexist, and homophobic so much of that pushback would be.

Much of it is unprintable — ugly tirades full of antigay slurs, mysogyny, and profanity, including the c-word, slung over and over. Callers shout obscenities and hurl names at the junior staffers who work the AG’s hotline.

snip//

"Hey witch . . . did you ban pressure cookers too?” somebody wrote, referring to the devices used in the Boston Marathon bombing.

“I hope you get throat cancer,” posted another.

“Another [expletive] woman passing laws based off emotional bias this is why woman[sic] should not have leading roles they’re emotionally to [sic] weak,” wrote a grammatically challenged charmer.

They’ve called Healey ugly, her agenda satanic, and taunted her for being gay. One person tweeted that he’d like to hire a homeless man to rape and disembowel the attorney general alive. A commenter on a gun nut blog tracked down her home address and posted it.

The loophole in the Mass. assault weapons ban

It’s no surprise the Orlando killer chose an AR-15 style assault rifle. It’s a weapon of war, originally created for combat, and designed to kill many people in a short amount of time with incredible accuracy. It’s in the same category as weapons chosen by killers in Newtown, Aurora, and San Bernardino. These are not weapons of self-defense. They are weapons used to commit mass murder. And they have no business being in civilian hands.

How in Massachusetts, then, home to some of the strongest gun laws in the country, do we allow people to buy these guns?

The gun industry has found a way to exploit our laws, a loophole of potentially horrific proportions. And it’s time we act.

The Massachusetts assault weapons ban mirrors the federal ban Congress allowed to expire in 2004. It prohibits the sale of specific weapons like the Colt AR-15 and AK-47 and explicitly bans “copies or duplicates” of those weapons. But gun manufacturers have taken it upon themselves to define what a “copy” or “duplicate” weapon is. They market “state compliant” copycat versions of their assault weapons to Massachusetts buyers. They sell guns without a flash suppressor or folding or telescoping stock, for example, tweaks that do nothing to limit the lethalness of the weapon.

You got one thing right.

"Progressivism should be based on verifiable reality, not moral panic-mongering and showboating"

The verifiable reality is people are being slaughtered all over this country. Men Women Children Babies because of antiquated gun laws and the NRA that is making Billions off every death.

What CIVILIAN NEEDS AN AK47!? You know who the show boaters are? Want to know who is panic mongering? It is those that cherish guns at any cost.

They do not fire full auto or burst as is what an assault rifle is. No military uses the AR-15 civilian version that I know of as it does not have a 3 round burst capability. The civilian rifle has been designed for civilian use only and will not accept military specification trigger parts. That is, it was designed for civilian usee, not for the military.

or at worst, outright lying. Knowledge of the subject is a good thing.

Colt uses "AR-15" for its semi-automatic civilian rifles and thus many use the term only for Colt AR-15s and clones made by other manufacturers. Other manufacturers make AR-15 clones and variants marketed under separate designations, although these are frequently referred to as AR-15s.

In 1964, Colt started selling the semi-automatic version of the M16 rifle as the Colt AR-15 for civilian use and the term has been used to refer to semiautomatic-only versions of the rifle since then. Colt continued to use the AR-15 trademark for its semi-automatic variants (AR-15, AR-15A2) that were marketed to civilian and law-enforcement customers. The original AR-15 was a very lightweight weapon, weighing less than 6 pounds with empty magazine.

After the Colt Armalite AR-15 rifle was purchased by the US military it was released to the public as a semi-automatic rifle

Civilian models can no longer be legally modified to full automatic in the United States. Today, the civilian manufacture, sale and possession of post-1986 select-fire AR-15 variants or automatic trigger group components is prohibited, per the Hughes Amendment to the Firearm Owners Protection Act, barring certain exempted groups such as motion picture armorers. However, it is legal to sell templates, tooling and manuals to conduct such conversion. These items are typically marketed as "post-sample" materials for Federal Firearm Licensees. They may be used to manufacture select-fire variants of the AR-15 for sale to law enforcement, military and overseas customers.[15]

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, conversion to full automatic was straightforward, using items such as the "Drop In Auto Sear" or "lightning link". In some cases such conversion required machining the lower receiver with a mill, as well as the substitution of a M16 bolt carrier group.[16][17] Modified weapons did not thereby become able to switch between the three modes of the military model. The latter required a special full automatic fire select mechanism and a modified selector-switch.[16] Many AR-15's made before 1986 were converted to M16s by gunsmiths who legally, producing Form One rifles.[18] A converted AR has an auto sear in a lower receiver marked as an AR-15.[18]

FOPA redefined the definition of a machine gun to include individual components with which a semi-automatic firearm can be converted to full-automatic (based on a 1981 ATF ruling on machine gun parts). Since 1993, the bolt carrier groups used in AR-15 type rifles for civilians have employed additional measures to prevent modification to full auto. Colt AR-15's use a metal alloy wall to separate the fire control group from the sear, preventing use of full automatic parts.

Here in Massachusetts, 10,000 assault weapons were sold just in the last year — each one nearly identical to the rifle used to gun down 49 innocent people in Orlando. In the week after the Pulse nightclub massacre, sales of weapons strikingly similar to the Sig Sauer MCX used at Pulse jumped as high as 450 percent over the previous week — just in Massachusetts.

Answer me this. Why does anyone need to own an assault rifle?

The Massachusetts assault weapons ban mirrors the federal ban Congress allowed to expire in 2004. It prohibits the sale of specific weapons like the Colt AR-15 and AK-47 and explicitly bans “copies or duplicates” of those weapons. But gun manufacturers have taken it upon themselves to define what a “copy” or “duplicate” weapon is. They market “state compliant” copycat versions of their assault weapons to Massachusetts buyers. They sell guns without a flash suppressor or folding or telescoping stock, for example, small tweaks that do nothing to limit the lethalness of the weapon.

That will end now. On Wednesday, we are sending a directive to all gun manufacturers and dealers that makes clear that the sale of these copycat assault weapons is illegal in Massachusetts. With this directive, we will ensure we get the full protection intended when lawmakers enacted our assault weapons ban, not the watered-down version of those protections offered by gun manufacturers.

But please stand against any reform, regulation, restriction - it's good to know the rightwing/NRA position, good to know what we are up against.

So much for *that* argument. As for your others:

But please stand against any reform, regulation, restriction

Only the pointless and ineffective ones.

it's good to know the rightwing/NRA position

You seem to have to have somehow gotten the notion that "not promulgating a moral panic"= 'rightwing/NRA position'

Bullshit.

That's the sort of sick trash talk that has become a hallmark of the pro-gun militancy movement. Good for Gabby on calling these diseased individuals out on their remarks. And best wishes to Attorney General Healy in her most worthwhile efforts.

Aug 2016

She and her husband came to our phone bank location the Sunday before the NY primary. She gave her stump speech, the same one she gave at the convention.

I was so moved that I was crying. Gabby lost so much, but continues to give so much to the people and the causes she believes in.
And she actually comforted me. She smiled at me and said, "don't cry" as I stood to have my picture taken with her.

Remarkable.

Especially when that "someone else" very nearly lost her life by some wacko with a gun intent on killing her.
Those particular people have no soul. I don't know what made them that way, but they're despicable.

The blog commenter, citing rape and disembowelment of our AG is one sick F**K. Yes, bet he feels like a really 'Big' man now. Would love to see a study.

They act like she is taking away their guns when she is in fact, closing the loophole in the Mass. assault weapons ban. WHY DO THEY NEED MILITARY ASSAULT WEAPONS in the first place? The little boys need them so badly, I say go join the Army.

gun-humping side didn't perpetually reference their manhood in the context of their devices that fire bullets. It's kind of impossible to ignore when one sees this kind of substitution behavior, amongst some, not all, mind you--but that 'some' are rather overt (and almost comical to the point that they can be mistaken for satirists) in their conduct. They also tend to get their back up easily and try to flip the script when the behavior is noted.

The reason for the mocking is because the behavior is so common--were it a rare occurence, no one would, to quote Oprah, "make the connection."

I simply don't worry about hurting fee-fees on this matter--I'm with Samatha Bee (the clip at the link is must-see):

But really, a simple google will pull up the relationship, which has been well articulated down the years, and anyone who has lived in society has an awareness of it. Do that google--you will see pages and pages and pages of links for you to peruse, if you are all that interested.

The relationship is well-established, and "outside DU" too--who'd a thought!

If the shoe doesn't fit you, I'd urge you to not wear it. I'm quite sure responsible "firearms owners" can recognize the type when they see it, too, if they'd take the time to look.

Because that is just not true at all. It would also behoove you not to make blanket ad hominem attacks on firearms owners. At least now you meekly admit there are "responsible" firearms owners. I do not believe you as you had to put that in quotes, but a vast majority of the around 100 million firearms owners are responsible. Many are here on DU.

Gabby Giffords. And "civility" has to do with how the AG was crudely insulted by gun humping sexist assholes.

Reading the article before commenting IS helpful. I urge you to do that in future before we are forced to assume that you are supportive of the hate-filled misogynists to which Ms. Giffords is objecting.

"Civility in our politics"?

AG personally decides to Reinterpret a law that has been on the books for 20 years - overnight...not much politics involved.

What did they expect as a response? Unicorns and rainbows and good thoughts?

Here's what they DON'T expect as a response--nasty, vile, sexist, homophobic disgusting threats of violence.

Unless you are supportive of that shit, you'd do well to just back up and recalibrate your response.
