Get rid of the Republican Party that presently exists and build another Republican Party. Because it is necessary to have at least two political Parties, for the benefit of democracy.
But it is this present political Party that has blocked every effort to improve the lives of the people, but never thought twice about giving tax breaks to the very wealthy, exactly those that do not need it, and our country will never be well until we perform an excisus, (Latin), on the present do-nothings posing as Congressmen and Senators of the present Republican Party. That is the only way we are going to fix what is wrong with our country.
Just my humble opinion.

(12,412 posts)has been caused by the Republican/Teabagger Party. Elected to destroy our government and they have almost succeeded. Now they are complaining that our government does not work.
From illegal wars to foreign trade deals to Wall Street thievery; all bears the Republican brand.

(2,902 posts)Why not instead make a law requiring ten parties that have broad support?

(2 posts)They are simply doing, what they have done for the last eighty years (or so).
Republicans believe in smaller, maybe even no federal government at all.
That's why they are always trying to screw up the federal government.
They have always liked the "provide for the common defence" but always seem to overlook the "promote the general Welfare" part.
It's much more surprising to me that almost all the top repubs are holding Trump at arms length. He would be a disaster of world shaking proportions. I would think every republican would love the guy.

(14,855 posts)... Republicans tend to be mostly concerned about the wealthy (the selfish ones).
They need government for protection of their lives and wealth. They need it for enforcement of contracts. They like it for corporate cronyism.
They don't need social programs, and people who do are "on their own." Never mind that, in my opinion, everyone benefits if this real-life "game of Monopoly" doesn't allow people to actually get knocked out of the game!
Anyway, Trump might actually FRIGHTEN them. Nuclear war could wipe out their lives and wealth in a hurry! Those wealthy folks were more than willing to pay a very high tax rate during WW2! It's amazing how they open their wallets once there's a REAL threat.

(46,179 posts)There are actually many ways to "fix" this country, none of which are possible if the people won't stand up and make it happen.
To start with, instead of trying to remake one of the two political parties that have a stranglehold on the nation, fix the system of elections:
1. 100% equal public financing of all elections, with no outside money.
2. IRV or something similar
3. Debates run by independent and neutral organizations, not connected to political parties or corporate media, that ask all debaters the same questions and ensure equal talk time
4. Paper ballots
5. A national voting holiday with abundant polling places OR a vote-by-mail system.
That's just a start, but it's a start in the right direction.

(111,104 posts)None of those things can happen with the present Republican Party ???

(46,179 posts)is not a majority, it can happen.
At least, it can if we elect Democrats who would work for those things.

(46,179 posts)about political parties. There have been parties that became active, and went away, or got absorbed into other parties.
The two current major parties, though, have continued to evolve. Neither, today, are what they once were, and both continue to evolve.
The Republicans have evolved into fascism. The Democrats have evolved into "old" Republicanism. What we really need is a major party on the left.
I think we are headed in that direction. Perhaps by the next election?
