NYTimes warns Obama not to blame GOP for economy--lest he seem like a "crybaby"

FAIR.org lambastes the NYTimes for this disingenuous meme....

Let's set aside the danger of being ridiculed by the right, which will happen no matter what. Obama might be a "crybaby" for criticizing the Bush era? As in the way most Americans continue to blame Bush for the economic disaster? That doesn't make any kind of sense.

Then again, this is a newspaper that once told readers (1/28/08) that Bush's economic record "would be the envy of most presidents." And a paper that seems unusually concerned with the dangers of populist economic appeals—calling talk of raising taxes on the wealthy is "politically sensitive"—though that idea is supported overwhelmingly by most Americans.

and mention the jobs bills that were blocked or stalled by the GOP in Congress? They could go on and mention how many jobs would have been saved or created had those bills passed, and the effect those jobs would have had on unemployment during Obama's presidency.

The economy we have today could be worse, had it not been for President Obama. He inherited a mess from Bush and the GOP, and the GOP has prevented the economy from getting any better by not allowing bills to pass that would have helped. They've done exactly what they said they were going to do: make sure Obama is a one term President, and if that means making Americans suffer longer and more than they would have, that's fine by them.

I only hope people keep this in mind when they vote in November.

Why is that a case for voting for him?

This is not a winning argument. He needs something else.

Time to hammer that damned Republican congress for all of its obstructionism, using specific examples. Time to let America know the sheer number of laws they have not allowed to be brought to the floor for debate let alone for a vote. A mashup of Boehner/Cantor/Ryan whining excuses to serve as a chorus for the list. What the GOP says "NO" to....damn list them out. Access to affordable healthcare, repairing of infrastructure (jobs), the jobs bill (jobs), affordable and realistic public education (jobs), an updated electrical grid (jobs), repaired and functional transportation system (more jobs), etc. Time for civic lessons for the public as to why these things are not there--why your legislature doesn't work.

The question is now "are you better off now?" but "what kind of American dream do you want?".

Hey, NYT, you know why it makes sense to continue to blame Bush for the economic disaster? Guess who created it? Unlike very small infants, most Americans can remember the existence of an object once it's been covered by a blanket--even if it's a blanket of lies.

Bush/GOP should wear it. These facts should NOT be in dispute:

1. The economy was doing overall very well on the day Bill Clinton' Presidency ended in January 2001
2. George W. Bush was POTUS for 8 years from 2001-2008, six years of which the Republicans completely controlled Congress (2001-2007).
3. George W. Bush was POTUS during the financial meltdown in late 2008
4. The economy was in the toilet, the day George W. Bush's (P)residency officially ended in January 2009

SO WHO (OR WHAT) ELSE WAS TO BLAME FOR THE ROTTEN STATE OF THE ECONOMY? AND WHAT HAVE THE REPUBLICANS DONE OR PROPOSED SINCE THEN TO FIX THINGS?

The right wing spins lies and blame to deflect from itself all the time.

I wouldn't mind if Obama gave himself a half hour truth rant once a week all over the tee vee.

she mentions that more people still blame Bush than blame Obama, but she doesn't point out that they are right, it is more Bush's fault.

But she also doesn't point out, and neither does Obama or any other Democrat or Romney or any other Republican, or anyone else in the media, that Obama continued Bush's main economic policy, the Bush tax cuts. And they didn't work, except to increase the wealth of rich people, both Obama and Romney among them, and probably Helene Cooper as well.
