Killer whale born a year before ill-fated Titanic struck an iceberg

Granny is a matriarch of crowd known as the Southern Resident Killer Whales in the Pacific Ocean. Ocean EcoVentures Whale Watching experts managed to spot her with the help of a marking on her dorsal fin, and a half-moon-shaped notch. In a blog post, they mentioned that 'J2 and her family have foraged and travelled the Georgia Strait' in last some weeks.

According to Simon Pidcock, from the company, J2 has been swimming pretty much non-stop for more than a century. On an average, the Southern Residents travel nearly 72 miles in a 24-hour period. It means that Granny in her lifetime has swum across the world the equivalent of a 100 times.

According to Executive director Michael Harris, J-Pod had come from the coast of California, close to the mouth of the Russian River, where it was seen eight days prior to the Pidcock’s 2014 sighting, which means the pod covered nearly 800 miles in only over a week.

According to a report in UPROXX by Abigail Eastwood, "You know how they say old dogs are the best dogs? That may be true, but do you know what’s even better than an old dog? A super old whale! Despite the fact that SeaWorld has told us most whales only live to be about 30, this majestic, jumping, beauty has exceeded our ill-informed expectations and then some!"

Orcas live to swim long distances in large pods...not stuck in a concrete pool they can barely turn around in.

well, I mean she is a cow technically, but still the failure to become a mother doesn't mean she's not amazing in her own right...

Whales are people too!

as I do not have children BUT the challenges facing all of the whales are causing many to perish. Garbage in their ocean and toxic chemicals are weakening some so they are vulnerable to disease. Apparently she has been able to withstand all of these changes and thrive.

Here is a nice story for you because you must love whales.
- I live near a small bay off the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Years ago a distraught male orca swam into the bay and kept beaching himself. His mother had died and he was suffering severe grief. People were trying what they could to get him back into the water but he kept going back to the beach. A team from Canada arrived and set up a barge next to the beached whale. All night and into the next day they took care of him by pouring water over him and keeping wet blankets on him. Finally by the next afternoon they were able to get him off the beach into the water and he followed their boat out into the Strait.
