Even die-hard Obama haters can not deny that he saved us from one thing

John McCain and Sarah Palin did not take the white house, and no matter how you feel about President Obama's efforts in behalf of progressives it can not be denied that he saved us from the tragedy that would have been a 2008 Republican White House. We would be deep in the depths of a Depression that would have dwarfed our experience of the 1930s, the war against Iraq would have continued in full force, or education system would have been in the hands of christian finatics, and any dissent in the public would have been brutally suppressed.

So like him or not, President Obama's presence, and continued presence, in the White House, is the only thing between us and what would quite predictably be the fall of the nation.

That argument doesn't sway most of Pres. Obama's detractors, however.

Your last sentence is, imo, too true. Our nation cannot move forward under Republican leadership. It can only recede.

Welcome to DU!

a President McCrazy and Carobou Barbie, we would easily have had 25% unemployment. One shudders to think of how much worse it could have and would have been.

There are more adamant detractors that couldn't be swayed if they were perched in the crow's nest of the Titanic. You've agreed that it "could/would be worse", which is only borderline detraction.

Unlike the apologists who believe he's saving the magic for term 2, I predict he'll double down on all the Third Way Crap. Seem's to me it's the ultra faithful who could be feeling the most rage and misery by the end of his time in office.

I don't see saving the magic for the second term at all. I see further progress on the things he has managed to do despite unprecedented Republican obstructionism.

There is always room for improvement, but I was never one of those that thought he was the Messiah. Although, when you look a little more closely at the House Republicans...hmmmmmmm...

We need to take the House and keep the Senate.

I don't think the OP was suggesting that. It's something we can all agree on, but somehow you managed to find a way to piss on Obama even with this. So kudos for you.

spin it into such a way that Obama can do no right.

Personally, I think the President's doing a good job. Not great, but certainly not bad. And it's 100000000000000 times better than it would have been under the angry and stupid banner. But I'm a Democrat, so I'm part of the "sheeple" as the most hardcore anti-Obama Libertarian and Republican doofuses like to call anyone who doesn't mirror their (their leaders') opinions.

One prolific poster here is on record of choosing 2008 when asked "If you could overturn one election since Ford vs Carter, which one would it be?"

That DUer chose 2008. Not 1980. Not 2000.

2008.

Let that sink in.

The Yellowstone caldera hasn't exploded, more good news.

I am not pleased that Obama signed off on the bail-out of bad financial institutions that wrecked the economy. Yes, he "saved" us from a depression, but I am not sure that bailing out rich people is in the best interests of the American people.

So I argue here: http://laelth.blogspot.com/2011/01/turning-american-ship-of-state.html
