Nearly 100 people have been shot in Chicago in less than a week, pushing the number of shooting victims so far this year to more than 2,500 about 800 more than this time last year, according to data kept by the Tribune.
Between last Friday afternoon and early Thursday, at least 99 people were shot in the city, 24 of them fatally. At least nine people were killed on Monday alone, the deadliest day in Chicago in 13 years, according to Tribune data. Among the wounded that day was a 10-year-old boy shot in the back as he played on his front porch in Lawndale.
The number of shooting victims in Chicago stood at 2,514 Thursday morning. At this time last year, 1,725 people had been shot. The city has not seen this level of gun violence since the 1990s, a trend the Police Department has blamed on lax gun laws and feuding gang factions.
Over eight hours from Wednesday evening through early Thursday, three people were killed and at least 10 others were wounded in the city.

(2,337 posts)Not exactly a groundbreaking concept.
If the norm of your neighborhood is daily shootings it's not exactly "news". They might as well write "Mainstreet still paved with asphalt"

Freedman suggested a different conclusion, though. Moral decay resulted not from density, but from excessive social interaction, Ramsden explained. Not all of Calhouns rats had gone berserk. Those who managed to control space led relatively normal lives. Striking the right balance between privacy and community, Freedman argued, would reduce social pathology. It was the unwanted unavoidable social interaction that drove even fairly social creatures mad, he believed.

(7,410 posts)They should be cracking down on the gangs in these problem areas, shake every one of them down, search cars, serve warrants in their houses and apartments. Surely the gang units know who the players are and where they live.

(11,996 posts)"In a city of 2.7 million people, about 1,400 are responsible for much of the violence, Mr. Johnson said, and all of them are on what the department calls its Strategic Subject List.
So far this year, more than 70 percent of the people who have been shot in Chicago were on the list, according to the police, as were more than 80 percent of those arrested in connection with shootings."
We are targeting the correct individuals, Mr. Johnson said. We just need our judicial partners and our state legislators to hold these people accountable.
