I heard it from someone who covered politics, ages ago.
JFK and Governor Pat Brown were speaking at some point after Brown defeated Nixon in the 1962 gubernatorial election. Brown supposedly said to JFK, well you beat him and I finished him. JFK responded (supposedly again) "yeah, but did anyone put a stake through his heart?"
This was after Nixon's news conference where among other things, Nixon accused the media of making him lose. (he lost by 4%)
I couldn't help but think of that story during the republican primary circus. And I still think of it in regards to Trump.
He needs a metaphorical stake through the heart of his political and business ventures.

(53,866 posts)Hillary will have driven the metaphorical stake through his heart.
She's an exceptionally qualified candidate and he is an exceptionally unqualified candidate, and this is becoming very clear to most voters.
Honestly, I'm more worried about 2018 and 2020 than 2016.

he's already talked about creating trump tv.
in fact, he's probably talked more about what he'll do after losing than what he'd do if he won.

went on to win the presidency after losing the presidential race of 1960 and the governor's race in 1962.
Fortunately for us, this will be Trump's one and only foray into politics.
And many extremists aren't there own stakes and manage to do horrific things for a long time.
Fortunately, Trump is quite inept, so I agree that he is his own stake.

Proud Public Servant
(2,097 posts)We know from defecting staffers that he never planned to be the nominee -- he was hoping to finish second as a way of building his brand.
Now, instead of getting a boost as the non-politician-who-almost-got-nominated, he's about to go down in history as the most incompetent and reviled candidate ever nominated by a major party, and he's going to do the one thing he hates doing -- lose, lose big, and lose publicly in a way that will never be forgotten.
And if that's not enough, he's actually already hurting his brand -- business at Trump properties is down, and the downturn seems directly linked to his campaign.
So mark it well: Trump (now 70, and not that healthy-looking) will retreat to the wingnutsphere and bilk the gullible, Palin-style, for a few more years. But this election will be a net loss for him, in terms of both money and reputation. He's over, and I suspect it can't come soon enough for him.

(47,953 posts)Look at how Romney was viewed when he was dithering about running this year. The base hates him for losing to 'The Kenyan". Trump will suffer the same fate if he loses to Hillary.

(114,904 posts)I wish him to lose his Trump University case. I wish him charged criminally... on anything. I wish him a plague of locusts. I wish him humiliation and ignominy followed by obscurity. I wish him every possible business setback. I wish Melania would divorce him.
I'm not nearly as nice as you are.
