OMG! A great match, but the USA Women came up short against Sweden.
First time the USA has missed the medal rounds. Pretty big upset, though the USA has had real problems against Sweden.

(1,184 posts)Sweden deserved to win, and I didn't have a good feeling going into the shootout. The U.S. looked uptight about it, while Sweden was loose, seemingly excited to pull the upset.
Following the U.S. women's team has long been one of my favorite hobbies. I love those girls, and they've set the standard for women's soccer. Three straight Olympic golds. The Rio Olympics are a lot less fun for me to watch now.

(24,396 posts)But as one of the commentators remarked, Sweden didn't seem dependent on "great opportunities" to score.

(1,184 posts)But I also think about the incorrect offside call that took away what would have been the winning goal for Sweden in extra time.
I think Rapinoe's absence has been significant.

(24,396 posts)I think if the first goal - scored by the USA - had been allowed to stand that the Swedish goal may not have materialized. Certainly, the play leading up to that goal would have been changed entirely.

(1,184 posts)If it was an offside call, then that was a shame. It was a beautiful goal.

(24,396 posts)I thought the commentators thought that was questionable. Maybe not.

(9,350 posts)I am shocked at this result. I thought the U.S. women were going to win this match. I was not able to watch the match, but I just assumed the women would win.
Maybe this team is too worn down. This team played in and won the World Cup last year. After winning the World Cup they continued playing for months on a victory tour. When the victory tour ended some of the players returned to their home teams to play professional soccer.
It could also be that this team did not have enough time to gel. A number of the players from the World Cup winning team either retired, played a limited role in the Olympics due to injury, or missed the Olympics due to pregnancy. Did this team have enough time to come together and learn what they needed to learn in order to win a gold medal?

(24,396 posts)Their final kick sailed high over the net. Their first kick was stopped by Sweden's goalie.
Penalty kicks are really stacked against the goalie. They need to guess left or right, so there's a 50-50 chance they guess wrong. Kicking the ball over the goal is really a huge mistake. It hands a point to the other team.
BTW - there were two late goals that were waved off by the referee, even though the replays showed both goals were good, one for each team. Had the first of those goals - made by the USA - been allowed to stand, the second goal probably wouldn't have happened, as that second goal grew out of the situation set up by the wave off of the first goal.

A heart breaker, for sure.

(3,163 posts)They had a lot of shots but not many actually on target and the shots that were on net were low quality. They miss Abby Wambach.
