http://tvline.com/2016/08/16/john-mclaughlin-dead-age-89-mclaughlin-group-host/The political commentators passing comes just days after he missed his first hosting of his eponymous syndicated public affairs program in more than 34 years.
I am under the weather, McLaughlin explained in a note that prefaced this past weekends telecast. His distinct, once-bellowing voice, heard in pre-taped intros, was weaker than usual, McLaughlin acknowledged. Yet my spirit is strong and my dedication to the show remains absolute!

(20,692 posts)I wonder what will become of it? I actually like to tape it because this is one show where I feel like the 4 guests actually say what they believe, rather than the scripted B.S.
89. We should all be so lucky.

(37,748 posts)I agree with your sentiment. He was an ostentatious and sonorous fellow, but his was the only talk show I've invested more than one or two viewings to.
No scripts, and all these old guard, old-hands were just winging it as issues arose and became relevant-- which gave me a much better insight into the issues than a scripted editorial would.

(32,028 posts)Always enjoyed the give and take on the show. The last few months it was clear something was wrong with him.

(3,486 posts)show. He was sitting in his chair but tilted and his suits were literally falling off of him. Based on how his voice sounded last week, my husband and I were convinced he had had a small stroke. RIP, Dr. McLaughlin. We'll miss you and your show.

(175,742 posts)Mostly I watched for Eleanor Clift and Clarence Page. But he did have "the hardest talk" as the program's introduction always said. He had looked quite unwell the last few months. And he loved his dog. RIP.

(1,638 posts)the war. Check this out, starting with issue two. If you remember the dark days of the early war, where many voices were saying you shouldn't criticize the president in a time of war (of course, they thought the war would last 2-3 weeks then - see Buchanan's comment), you'll appreciate how unusual this was (also worth checking out Elvis Costello hosting the David Letterman show on the eve of the war).
