(15,036 posts)I prefer the take of the crazy lady in Minnesota who claimed he lived with her for awhile after his "death," and who explained his reason for faking his demise was because "he wanted to be able to go to Kmart without mobs of people bothering him."
Could be.

(26,268 posts)I can still remember her reaction, which was epic. I was, and still am, more a fan of Beatles/Mersey music, but I still felt pretty sad that someone so incredibly young and talented had died.
But I always wonder how people like Elvis, and Marilyn Monroe would have handled aging. I know that might sound a little judgmental and assuming they were shallow, but were they the kind of people who would have adapted and recognized it might be time to just leave the fame behind, and relax.
I always admired Sean Connery for doing just that. He knew his leading man days were over, and he never turned into a caricature of himself.
Sorry, sometimes my brain starts whirling, and I just start typing.

(13,340 posts)My neighbor was an Elvis NUT.... complete with black velvet painting. To this day, her house is kitsch paradise of Elvis junk. Did you know there are Elvis dildos? She has one proudly displayed in her display case.

(53,339 posts)I especially got a kick out of seeing Chuck Palahniuk, the author of 'Fight Club,' as a reference. What next, Ken Kesey? I would not be surprised.

(53,339 posts)I was driving around the country from California with an Aussie vet buddy who wanted to see the Wall. Passed through Memphis. We liked Elvis, but weren't huge fans, and the steep ticket prices put us off. My buddy was satisfied with my taking a photo of him at the gate, with its wrought iron musical notes.
Never got to go "down in the jungle room."
From the moment I first heard it, I've loved Cohn's song!

(53,339 posts)He was in Sha Na Na, wasn't he? We talked for quite a while and he gave me his card.
I missed Woodstock, though. Uncle Sam needed me in Southeast Asia and the brass thought an R&R at Woodstock was a bridge too far.

(9,186 posts)The AP teletype was in a closet across the hall from the news studio. When the Flash came in I was standing right by the closet. I looked at the Flash, which was very brief: "Elvis Presley, the self styled king of rock and roll, has died," walked into the studio, potted down the music and read the announcement. I may have been the first broadcaster to actually air the story, although I have no way of actually knowing. Certainly it was on the air within ten seconds of ripping the wire copy.
I continued to air the story periodically. About an hour later I did it again. By this time the GM had returned to the station. When I walked out of the studio he look at me in horror and said "You can't say that on the air!" I just handed him the Flash and kept walking.
