It was hours after curfew. It isn't as if the mugging caused them to be late.

More has come out today. There's video of them destroying property at a gas station. They admitted to paying cash for the damages and were trying to cover it up.

Just because the chief of police can't find the perps doesn't mean it didn't happen.

Too much weight is being placed on video of them joking around afterwards. Well, yeah, sometimes people try to make themselves feel better after a scary event by goofing around. They had been up all night and maybe they were drunk. I don't know why they'd lie about this.

What percentage of robberies do they solve in Brazil? My guess it's not that high (not that high here in US either). And do they charge everybody whose robbery they can't solve?

Drunk guys break a door, maybe without realizing it. Accosted by owner, who yells at them in a language they don't understand. They try to leave, he pulls a gun on them, demanding money to fix the door. They give him their money and he lets them go.

They think they've been robbed, the owner thinks he's had restitution. No malice on anybody's part, just a colossal misunderstanding.

The 2 guys they have detained never said anything so far. I'm guessing one will spill the truth. What makes me think this is a little lie that has spun out of control is that none of these guys reported it initially, it was Lochte's mom that told a reporter and then they doubled down. What a mess.

so no curfew to worry about. And there's been no suggestion that their behavior/attendance at a party late into the night was questioned or even noted by team officials before the robbery story broke out. They really had nothing to lie about.

There is no way I'd vacation in that place.

Here's another story about a Chinese athlete getting robbed and an Australian one at gunpoint as well.

I think it's real Rio police officers doing it and the Brazilians are running damage control.

Here's more on the violence down there...

I've been to the favelas, to relatively isolated areas away the main streets, as well as the popular tourist areas. Nothing has ever happened to me. Well, I did have a Jehova's Witness try to convert me, but aside from that.

Two of the swimmers involved in the incident, Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz, were removed from a U.S.-bound flight on Wednesday night and detained by Brazilian officials. They told officials the story had been fabricated, the AP reported.

"“The three U.S. Olympic swimmers (Gunnar Bentz, Jack Conger and James Feigen) are cooperating with authorities and in the process of scheduling a time and place today to provide further statements to the Brazilian authorities,” Patrick Sandusky, a United States Olympic Committee spokesperson, said in a statement. “All are represented by counsel and being appropriately supported by the USOC and the U.S. Consulate in Rio.”
