Does Chris Matthews ever shut up?

The mouth that roared

He routinely has a three person panel on his MSNBC show and when he asks a guest a question Matthews doesn’t give them time to answer.

The guest gets out about three words before Matthews starts talking over them, interrupoting, arguing and then stopping that guest to go to the second and third member of the panel where Matthews again keeps interrupting.

Why bother having guests when he apparently thinks he knows more than anyone else.

Just my humble opinion

Every once in a while he has a good moment or two going after a right wing idiot. But usually he just talks a mile a minute over his guests. I get it that he loves politics...I am a political junkie too. But he acts like he is on speed.

He does it for 2 reasons; first, it is correct (he was Jimmy Carter's speechwriter, after all and an aide to Tip O'Neill, he understands that getting it right matters) and second, it annoys the fuck out of rightwingers who don't understand that this IS the correct way that the "Chee-knee" family pronounce their own name. How do I know? Because I heard it from "Chee-Knee's" own thin lips.

He reminds me of Phil Donahue, who would ask a question and then after three words from the guest, complete the answer, indicate his empathy with and understanding of the answer (not) given. Then he would launch a paragraph directed at the camera.

My mother used to say Phil was in love with the sound of his own voice. My father would have said he is a legend in his own mind. If they were still around I'm sure they would say the same about Chris Matthews.

Chris irritates me with the chatter so I don't watch him often.

Change the channel. If you don't want to hear Matthews talk, don't turn his show on. Talking over people? Not giving guests time to offer a complete response? That's business as usual for talk and "news" shows.

He thinks he's playing "hardball" by asking pointlessly long questions and then immediately interrupting his guest to either answer his own question or to ask a totally different question.

Instead, all he's doing is annoying his audience, who is wondering why even invite all these interesting people on the show if they can't get a word in edgewise, as Tweety yammers on.

You know who has been succeeding in playing true "hardball" with the guests? Joy Reid! She fact-checks them in real time, she steers them back on course when they ignore her question to answer the one they wanted to get, and yet she knows when to shut up and let the guest talk at length.

Rachel Maddow calls Tweety "The Great Interrupter," meaning it as a compliment, but one not deserved. He would be better used as a guest instead of a host. Then he can go on Joy's show, and she can be the one to interrupt him when he needs it!
