Earp cabin, Clyde Ranch barn among local historical vestiges lost to Blue Cut fire

A pair of local landmarks — the Earp cabin and an old barn on the Clyde Ranch — can be added to the historical vestiges lost to the fast-moving Blue Cut fire, which has gobbled up more than 37,000 acres of brush and chaparral in the Cajon Pass.

The fire has devastated the West Cajon Valley, decimating nearly 100 homes and more than 200 outbuildings, leaving a scarred and blackened landscape in its wake.

Thursday, the news began to spread that the Earp Cabin, as it’s known in the community, and an old barn on the Clyde Ranch along Lone Pine Canyon Road were gone.

According to Cataldo, the cabin was built by Almon Clyde with help from Virgil Earp, brother of famous western lawman, Wyatt Earp.

Every time we have one of these fires up here we lose more of our irreplaceable history. The number of homes lost was really bad, shocking actually and many people were working and couldn't get up to rescue their animals. Luckily many very good people went around saving the animals they could, the community has really come together. The one thing I hope is that they really go after the motel owners who jumped their prices 300-400 percent to take advantage of the people who had to evacuate.

Many work down the hill so by time they got up the sheriffs had the roads blocked because it was just plain dangerous. The people who took their cars, trucks and horse trailers around to save animals belonging to strangers were just amazing.

Fires are terrifically unpredictable and can "blew up" as you say very unexpectedly.

Heartbreaking 😢.

Thank goodness for the people who risked themselves to save what they could for those they did not know...it is actions like this that make think there might still be hope for our species.

I hope for the safety of those involved in fighting this fire and those impacted by it and that there is no more loss of any life.
