Typhoon No. 9 wreaks havoc in Kanto, forces evacuations

Powerful typhoon No. 9 caused accidents and problems in many areas in the Kanto region on Aug. 22 after making landfall, forcing the cancellations of trains and flights and evacuations in areas at danger of flooding and landslides.

The slow-moving typhoon, packing strong winds and heavy rainfall, made landfall near Tateyama, Chiba Prefecture, around 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 22. It is expected to reach areas near Fukushima city on the evening of Aug. 22, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

In western Tokyo, a power pole that supports the wiring for trains tipped over a railway track between Musashiyamato Station and Seibuyuenchi Station of the Tamako Line, according to Seibu Railway Co.

The accident occurred when soil beneath the power pole was washed away by heavy rain. A four-car train running nearby stopped before the site. None of the six passengers were injured.

Municipalities hit by the typhoon urged residents living near rivers or slopes to evacuate due to the possibility of flooding or landslides.
