Boeing wants to fight forest fires with a howitzer

an artillery shell that would deliver up to six gallons of fire retardant per round, day or night, 24 hours a day, in any weather, regardless of fire conditions. Some guns could deliver fire retardant within 15 feet of a target at a range of 15 miles, according to the application.

The shell would explode in midair, above the fire, and retardant coverage would vary between one and six gallons per 100 square feet. There is even a proposed variation that does not use any explosive material or fuse.

fighting forest fires is a dangerous business, anything that lowers the risk to man works for me.

And it's a flexible technology that could deliver herbicides onto feral pot operations, heat onto moonshiners's stills or tear-gas onto protesting tree-huggers.

Send a C-130 gunship to the fire location. I don't know how cost-effective this is.

There are a million vets skilled in artillery handling. Hell as an OS in the navy, I used to plot Naval Gunfire Support.

why not apply them in these large free burning uncontrolled fires exploding droplets of retardant. They have been using converted airliners, but in the old days they did use bombers.
