I was Dale Evans -- got the costume for
my eighth bday... there's a pic of me in it
as pleased as punch, grinning a gap toothed
smile.
I was a Mouseketeer too!

(53,339 posts)Went to Panama in the Army enroute to Vietnam. We'd go to town from Ft. Gulick and there was a popular nightclub where I wound up with a Colombian singer, Marquecita (Little Queen) Ube as my girlfriend.
I also made friends with the band's drummer, who lived in a hovel in the back streets of the town. He invited me to his home and it was quite a shock to this then very young American to see his living conditions.
That was in the days when Noriega's military goons were on every street corner with their assault weapons. G.I.s knew better than to get into rouble in town. Though I once decked a guy in the nightclub--and then disappeared fast!
Ah, Panama. Many Americans have gone there and discovered it's much more than hats.

(34,582 posts)Real Panama hats are made in a specific region of Equador, they just came to the attention of Americans during construction of the Panama canal.

(53,339 posts)You made an innocuous comment about the hats. For me, it triggered some old memories not really related to hats or even your comment. Just an oportunity to share something.
Funny that the hats were Ecuadorian, though. I guess 'Panama hats' just rolled off the tongue better, especially when the canal was in the news. We'll have to add that to our list of misnomers.

(32,886 posts)I've been wearing mine a lot the last few weeks with the temperatures being as hot as they have been.
Angela is actually wearing my wife's Panama hat.
We got them in Panama a couple of years ago.
