Unlike my wife, I was not really into Prince's music back in the day. I would have been found instead wherever in town the Replacements or Husker Du or Soul Asylum might be playing.

But the Revolution show at First Avenue last month was tremendous. If this is what the music is like when performed live, without Prince, then the original live shows must have been beyond all description. I came away with the feeling that, for me, personally, if I had only heard the music live back then, it would have reached me in a way that the recordings hadn't. And to think that there was a time when I could have heard it live, just by walking down the street!

It was a powerful and somewhat spooky feeling to be experiencing the music right there in the same room where it had all gone down. And quite an experience for my wife to re-live. While Wendy Malvoin, at the mic, reminisced about her backstage jitters in the moments before the band debuted "Let's Go Crazy" to the world, my dear Mrs. Ed nodded toward a spot about thirty feet off to our left and said, "Oh yeah, I was right over there...".

I felt that night as though I understood for the first time why Prince's music has touched people so deeply, and meant so much to so many.
