Yesterday, my wife and I attended a game between the Saint Paul Saints and the Lincoln (NE) Salt Dogs. Both are independent minor-league teams. I don't really follow minor league baseball (or any other kind) but there's a new ball field in St. Paul, and we hadn't been there.
Minor league games are fun. In fact, the Saints' motto is "Fun is Good!" Most of the 9,000 or so in attendance at this game, which was the last one of the season for the Saints, weren't really watching the game as much as enjoying the crowd and the many fine food options available from the vendors on the park's concourse.
Anyhow, during the fourth inning, a vendor came through our area of the stands, loudly proclaiming his wares. Not hot dogs or beer or peanuts. His cry was:
"Cupcakes! Cookies!"
Now, I wasn't in the mood for either, but I found it interesting, and I saw several people hand over $3.50 for a cupcake in the stands. How cool!
What's next as an offering from the roving vendors at this ballpark?
"Strudel!" "Lefse!" "Macaroons!" "Sushi!"
Fun is Good!

(4,211 posts)We have an independent team nearby, the Sugarland Skeeters (yes, VERY stupid name); four people can go to a game for the price of 1 decent Astros ticket, so when we have the hankering to go to a game, we go to the Skeeters. Lots of fun stuff between innings; several years ago they had goat races with monkey jockeys and it was pretty durn funny

(146,338 posts)They even have a live pig as a mascot. The pig trots out between innings, while contests and other things happen on the field.
It's all in the spirit of fun. Reasonably priced tickets and not outrageous concession prices, either.

(16,864 posts)food vendors will sell what food customers will buy
I have been to maybe 15 big league games this year.....well sort of big leagues.....I follow the brewers......
my best buddy has been getting 20 game season ticket packs for a number of years now
while the basics do exist, each year the food does trend a bit more upmarket, cause upmarket returns more cash than basic and the vendors basic purpose in life is for the customer to go home happy with an empty wallet
i do marvel at how inventive some of these offerings are. And how they can be churned out quickly.
i am reminded at how each year at the state fair a new item is being offered deep fried.....
its not just hot dogs and peanuts anymore....
