Zika Funding Fails Again in Congress (tried to eliminate Planned Parenthood and cut the VA)

Zika Funding Fails Again in Congress
by MAGGIE FOX

Congress came back from a seven-week break Tuesday and once again failed to move forward a bill that would pay for a federal Zika response.

As senators traded barbs about whose fault it was, Florida health officials said they'd found seven more home-grown cases of Zika, six of them part of an outbreak in Miami Beach. Florida now has documented 56 locally transmitted cases of Zika infection, presumably passed by Aedes aegypti mosquitoes that are active nearly year round in south Florida.

"Republicans were more interested in attacking Planned Parenthood and flying the Confederate flag. Can't make that stuff up — that's really the truth — than protecting women and babies from this awful virus," said Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

"They sent it back with all this strange, weird stuff in it. They cut funding for the Veteran's Administration by half a billion. They tried to disguise the fact that they wanted to eliminate Planned Parenthood."

The media aids and abets them in their lust for a religious fascist state.

I agree, if the facts were reported to the public these scum would have been defeated long ago.

and not PP nationally. This is the first I've heard about the VA funding, however. I'm not sure how people in FLA will feel about this if Zika gets worse. They may not view this the way we think they would. For instance, I can see someone getting mad because their child got Zika and the bill that would have provided funding to combat Zika was stopped because it stripped funding only for PP Puerto Rico. How many people live in FLA compared to the number of people in Puerto Rico heading to PP? Again...the VA thing I need to read up on.

In the fight against Zika.

Susan Collins, a Republican senator from Maine known for forging compromises across party lines, was more explicit in calling for the language restricting funds to a Planned Parenthood affiliate in Puerto Rico to be dropped from the bill.

“Given that a lot of women are going to decide to delay childbearing during this public health crisis, it does not make sense to exclude an organization like Planned Parenthood which is a source of family planning for so many,” she said.

“I view this as a public health crisis and one that we should act on.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have estimated more than 2,700 cases of Zika in the continental US – putting the figures at more than double what they were when Congress skipped town in July without resolving the stalemate. There are at least 14,000 cases in US territories, with Puerto Rico the most heavily impacted by the virus.

By trying to defund Planned Parenthood there the Republicans showed they care more about pushing their right wing agenda than providing essential health care services targeted to people in a US territory who need them the most and who are currently most vulnerable to the virus.

Since the Zika rider has been getting attached to larger funding bills, like the one for the VA, it looks like they were trying to get sneaky cuts in there, too.
