After 5 months of abdominal pain, a cat scan, x-rays, blood work, hydrocodone, etc the gastroenterologist who told me a couple months ago I needed these tests,
has finally scheduled a combination endoscopy and colonoscopy. "They" told me it'd take about 3 to 4 hours from the time I walk in to the time I walk out.
Having had this pain for so long, plus that two of my brothers died of cancer and another currently has cancer, is a worry.
I'll go in Monday the 26th at 1 P.M. At this point, I just want to know why I have this pain and hopefully something can be done about it.

(21,056 posts)I had similar issues a couple years ago, and had a colonoscopy and had a few polyps removed. I felt nothing from what was done. I hope the best for you!

(8,421 posts)Basically, for a colonoscopy (which I have had 2 of!) you will not know it is happening. You'll wake up after it is over (I'm sure you're asking to be sedated). The prep is worse than the procedure.
I'm sure you have looked at your diet and eliminated all possible causes of abdominal pain. Do you take a pro-biotic?

(8,421 posts)I'm glad you do, too. I hope the 26th brings you some answers and relief.
Do you eat foods with carageenan ( a type of seaweed)? It seems to produce upset like you're talking about. I had to quit taking my Omega Fish Oil as it caused the runs. No fish oil, no runs!

(971 posts)The worst part of The Appointment With The Big Black Snake is the day before: You can't eat anything, can only drink clear liquids, then you have to do The Drink.
1) It doesn't taste as bad if it's cold.
2) Do NOT get any more than 30 seconds away from the toilet at any time.
3) Make sure there are no obstacles on the route to aforementioned "appliance".
4) Spend a few bucks and get the really soft paper, you'll appreciate it later.
5) Although vodka is considered a clear liquid, do NOT use it as a mixer for The Drink ( http://www.miamiherald.com/living/liv-columns-blogs/dave-barry/article1928847.html )
6) If you weigh under 175 pounds, ask for the "Name Brand" version of The Drink. The generic doesn't come with the strap that fits on the toilet and works like a seat belt, to prevent people from getting airborne.
A sense of humor is IMPORTANT. DO NOT forget that.
Best wishes for a definitive answer that enables a nice, quick, and easy solution.

(5,737 posts)Cancer survivor here, so I know things seems pretty dark before they get brighter. I do question why no colonoscopy was scheduled the very first thing given your family history.

(21,506 posts)I have similar symptoms and had the same thing and all I ended up with was a bill and an explanation that everything looked normal.
Nice to hear but not that helpful. The bills were madness. Think I got 5 different bills from different people after insurance.

(21,506 posts)What ended up happening is that I got billed from several different places. The doctor the anesthesiology, the facility.,and something else I can't remember off the top of my head.
Hopefully yours works out better and they are able to help you figure out what is going on I know it is no fun.

(65,394 posts)but the endoscopy found a duodenal ulcer that didn't show on the X-rays. I was so relieved. A few days of Nexium, combined with stopping the aspirin I was taking for my arthritis and my heart, cured the ulcer and the horrible, agonizing pain.
I hope you have a similarly easy to fix outcome. Let us know how it turns out for you!

(60,074 posts)If you do, we will welcome you at our cancer group.
Be strong.
I had a pain in my stomach, loss of appetite, constipation, weight loss. It took tests after tests to figure out I had Crohn's disease. Prednisone took care of it.
The other time I had persistent stomach pain. It was an ulcer. Some 50 mega ton antibiotics fixed that.
So, don't assume cancer. If it is, become a happy warrior, fight like you've never fought before.

(81,304 posts)Something else worthwhile from here at DU that I've just discovered. That's really cool. And left-of-center2012, you can always post somewhere in the general arenas. Remember something Skittles said: "someone's always here." When my mom died, that suddenly became one of the most vital and sustaining elements of that strange sad time, for me. Helped me get through it. It works. The support was/is incredible.

(2,004 posts)My spoue has had repeated colonoscopies due to polyps. The prep is the always the toughest part even when he has had numerous polyps removed.
If you are diabetic, the prep can be rather problematic as there is nothing with protein that fits the prep diet very well. We used the broth strained from chicken noodle soup which the nurse said was ok That helped a little the last time.
Take and I hope you get relief very soon.
