Smell the Tyranny

Remember, we're talking about kids whose parents brought them to this country illegally who then went on to be law-abiding normal American young adults. The president is giving them a break. Smell the tyranny:
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Lamar Smith called the Obama administrations plan a breach of faith with the American people that blatantly ignores the rule of law that is the foundation of our democracy.
Wisconsin Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, the former chairman of the House Judiciary Committee and current chairman of that committees subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security, said the administrations announcement was a political calculation Obama made during an election year in an effort to appeal to some voters.
Sensenbrenner added that he thinks the announcement is offensive to the millions of Americans still out of work.
It rewards law-breaking, Sensenbrenner said. And its deeply unfair to those who came to this country legally.
Are you offended that these kids will no longer be punished for their parents' decisions?

(25,699 posts)Illegal immigration is a misdemeanor. Not just that - it's a civil, rather than criminal misdemeanor. These people aren't "criminals" any more than someone who puts on their blinker too close to the turn. if police departments around hte nation can decide to not bother with shit like jaywalking or public gum-chewing, then the president saying "we have bigger problems we need to focus on" isn't going to hurt a goddamned thing.
"But they should immigrate legally, like my ancestors did!" - ignoring for a minute that unless one traces your ancestry back to the Bering fucking land bridge, your ancestors were one and all either trespassers or the captives of tresspassers, let's take a look at the early years of immigration. This is how it worked.
You came into a port. You met a guy. he gave you a card where you filled out your name and your occupation and what relatives you had on board with you. He then asks you to renounce your former national allegiances, and just like that, you are a US citizen. And honestly, that was ONLY for people coming across the Atlantic. The border with Mexico was completely porous, and you were a citizen of whichever side of that border you were settled on at the time. On the pacific coast, same thing - you step on shore, and for all legal (if not always conventional...) purposes, you were now an American.
Our current system is the remnant of a eugenicist policy that set racial and national quotas in order to maintain the "white character" of hte United States.
So yes. Let's go back to the Ellis Island days. We'll just have a thoroughfare at several locations at the border where we check for contraband, have you fill out a card, and congratulations, you're an American.

(171,099 posts)I stopped arguing with because she claims Latinos are ruining her neighborhood. Multiple families in homes, trash, people, etc., are bringing down the land values.
I stop talking because I'm not in her shoes.
I want to advocate for immigrants, and do, but I do see her side a bit.

(25,699 posts)Her argument isn't very strong; trashy people are just trashy people, and they come from everywhere.

(8,159 posts)5 newfoundland dogs and a doggy door. Things like paper towels/toilet paper, shoes, and sometimes clothes go out that door when we are not watching. We would really bring her neighborhood down.
