(10,252 posts)Survive is from the French. "sur" = on top of; "vivre" = life. Survive - to be on top of life. For some people, it feels like life is on top of them. Suicide, except in the case of great physical pain and debilitation, is very unfortunate. It leaves a lot of living family and friends in its wake.
One of my siblings did that last year... different method but same result. Still dealing with a legal mess of left behind property without a will. This guy seems like he was making a rash decision since he was just suspended and then goes outside and shoots himself, rather impulsive... but that just my opinion.

(49,212 posts)If that investigation had wrapped up while he was alive he could have been on the hook for a lot of repayment if he was involved. Might have lost his pension too.
But he died before the investigation was complete. Any ill gotten gains would be harder to reclaim, a spouse would still get his pension and death benefits, and probably a big insurance payout as well.
It might have seemed like the responsible way out of an otherwise ruinous situation.

(21,506 posts)BAY ST. LOUIS -- Affidavits signed in 2014 by the mayor and police chief certified the city had $298,000 in its U.S. Department of Justice forfeitures account. But according to its own financial records, the city did not have that money.

Among the documents the Sun Herald obtained are affidavits signed by Police Chief Mike De Nardo and Mayor Les Fillingame, which are submitted annually to the DOJ.
The affidavits are attached to a five-page form certifying the amount of cash in the DOJ forfeitures account and listing any amount spent or transferred from the account.
The affidavit for Bay St. Louis' fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 2014, states the account had an ending balance of $298,108 with no money spent or transferred that year by the police department.
However, that money appears neither on the city's annual budget nor on its revenue-and-expense report for that year. There is no line item to account for any federal sharing or DOJ forfeitures money on either financial report.
A preliminary audit released in August reported the city failed to properly separate the DOJ money from other funding sources and did not have the money restricted as of Sept. 30, 2014.
