Pregnant prisoners are being forced to go through labor while cuffed and shackled.

Not sure how I missed this news until now. I want to say I can't believe this is happening, but that would be a complete lie. It's shocking and horrible, but sadly not much of a surprise at all.

Women are born free in the US but everywhere give birth in chains
America is almost unique in the civilised world for forcing pregnant prisoners to undergo childbirth cuffed and shackled

In 2007, a 17-year-old girl called Cora Fletcher was charged with retail theft. Over a year later, after she missed a court date, she was sent to the Cook County jail, in Illinois. She was eight months pregnant at the time.

During a pre-natal check-up at the facility, her baby appeared to have no heartbeat, so she was sent to the county hospital. As the medical team tried to induce her, Fletcher claims that both her hands and both her feet were shackled to either side of the bed. Only when she finally went into labor, three days later, was one hand and one foot released. It's hard to imagine a more crucifying way to force a woman to try to give birth.

Sadly for Fletcher, there was no payoff for the trauma and humiliation she was forced to endure, as her baby was born dead.

Fletcher was one of the plaintiffs in a class action lawsuit brought against Cook County on behalf of 80 female prisoners and detainees who also claimed to have had similar experiences of being shackled during childbirth. Just under two weeks ago, the county agreed to a settlement of $4.1m dollars payable to the women, who will each receive between $5,000 and $45,000.

this abuse has been going on for some time now-- and it's another example
of PIC (Prison Industrial Complex) policy which doesn't change regardless
of how hideous it is, or who is in charge in congress.

5. All these millions of examples of the cruelty, deliberate cruelty, in our society...

It can't be just by mistake, can it? It's as if someone is deliberately trying to design the most inhumane, cruel, dystopian society ever.

Is this all just happening by accident? I truly want to understand this.

12. It's not exactly accidental... but it's not a plan. There are many factors involved.

Fetishization of power and domination, unchecked greed, rape culture, etc... the longer it goes on the worse things get.

I smile, compliment them, make small talk at the cash register, etc.

People look so grateful for that bit of niceness, it's like I'm giving them a drink of water after they've trekked through the desert.

I hope we wake up as a society. We can't keep going this way.

that the public has become psychologically numb by over exposure to cruelty. This is the classic response to having received my bad information than can be tolerated. Mass depression is next and we are very near to that.
