Mark Shields: "But, very bluntly, "this is the worst day of Mitt Romney's life" (6/15/12)

Shields, Gerson on the Politics of Immigration, Campaign Finance and Watergate

..................

But, very bluntly, this is the worst day of Mitt Romney's life, as the presumptive nominee of the Republican Party. Being president means that you are at a negative end when there's bad job numbers. But being president when you can take an affirmative action that makes your opponent squirm, even though it is an action that is totally consistent with where you have been in a policy sense -- and this for Mitt Romney is a character issue, because in 2008, 2012, he ran to the hard right of John McCain, of Rudy Giuliani, of Mike Huckabee there 2008, and of Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry in 2012 on the immigration.

He embraced the Arizona -- controversial Arizona state law. He said he would veto the DREAM Act. And they're looking at the fastest growing constituency in the country. And he really is scrambling now to get back.

What does Mitt Romney do? Does he reject the president's action? Does he promise to repeal it? Does he promise to honor it? Does he support legal challenges against it? He -- I thought he was terribly slow off the mark today. His answer was equivocal.

Mitt Romney had to admit he was either a hypocrite or that he didn't have much of a problem with the President's position.

A Good Thing done for political reasons, is still a Good Thing. I would imagine the really good days in office are the ones when you can do a Good Thing and screw your opposition at the same time.

POTUS has indeed allowed them to find themselves in a "damned if we do-damned if we don't" situation. You can tell because FUX News can't even figure out how to respond-rubio and mittens are beside themselves.

One big reason I will vote for Obama is that Mitt is apt to be much worse on immigration. At least Obama has always supported the Dream Act (even though his excessive enforcement of border security put him well to the right of Bush on immigration issues early in his Presidency).

didn't it. Mittens as usual had nothing but blank words in his comments and refused to answer reporters questions. At least Pres O would have stopped and answered a few mores questions.

Expose Mittens in an open question and answering session and no, not only just Fake news. He and his campaign are to chicken to do that because we all know that Mittens can't handle any questions asked him without he being schooled first.

Pres O and his administration are working for the American people, call it a political move, so be it, and expect more. What his administration is doing is exposing the Greedy party of No.

Pres O campaign can not best the gopper's money machine, but he can out smart them.
