Who can guess Steve Bannon's strategy in bringing birtherism back into the spotlight?

It will, for sure, come up in the debates. Does he want that?

It will, for sure, counter any softening in AA support for HRC. Does he want that?

It will, for sure, inspire greater AA turnout. Does he want that?

It will, for sure, cause some reluctantly resigned GOPee voters to turn away, again and finally. Does he want that?

I see no upside. The racist motherfuckers community will see this as political necessity but not really what Trump thinks. So they won't leave, but this will not increase their numbers. He already has them all.

So what is the strategy? Can anyone guess?

2. Seems like they just wanted to put it behind them

And they figured this would be a short, fast and simple way to do it, including that snarky I finished it shit, a "So be it" kind of moment.

The mistake here was to piss off the press by tricking them into doing a commercial for that stupid hotel. Otherwise it might have actually worked.

.... businessman which is one of his top pluses for the deplorable (which I don't know why the HRC campaign hasn't laser focused on) so it would've been net positive.

The upside is:
1. everyone is talking about Trump Trump Trump.
2. by wink-winking his retraction, he shores up his credibility with his racist, idiot base.

5. But he has no need to shore up his racist base.

It can't be that difficult. Seen an entertainment awards ceremony lately? It's become the latest element of the Punking/Bully culture, and the model is already out there: tRump hussles himself & punks; MSM (esp. visual) serves.

12. The press had made it clear this was going to be an issue.

He tried to dodge it by saying that he doesn't discuss that anymore. The press wasn't having it. After all, the birther thing was what brought him to light as a political person. The most clear example was probably on Chris Matthews' show. The surrogate said Trump didn't want to say anything because it would become a story and Matthews and the other guests made it clear to him that they could make it a story, and were going to, whether he said anything or not. I think they just realized it was going to be a question at the first debate, and that refusing to answer there was not going to be a good look.

15. ^^^^^ Yes and he preferred to spout out his lie that she started it, I ended it- with no rebuttal

What could be more brilliant- sucker the media into giving him a free infomercial and self-promotion while avoiding a face to face rebuttal from Hillary or Lester Holt at the first debate or any questions from an interviewer.

I am sure he, like most of us, is shocked he actually got called out as a liar all over mainstream media who have been such weaklings in standing up to his lies before.
