Without spending a moment of time or energy to vet the people and ideas. Lazy pricks just press retweet and think no more. It's just more greed and laziness.

Or how the Confederate Battle Flag morphed from a forgotten historical civil war relic to a symbol of resistance to civil rights in the mid 20th Century.

I see it all over the places, at work, in small neighborhoods, at stores...

In any group of a dozen general people, one or two people are actually racist - telling the jokes, making the comments, making "that face" (that scrunched up nose and sideways glance) at people of different color while they actively work to either ignore or keep "those people" in a lower social position, and copping that "don't think about crossing my privilege, b***h", attitude.
Another one or two are usually the targets of the racist(s), either by being a minority member, or because they called the racist(s) out at one point in time.
About six to eight people in that group of a dozen are just go about their business type of people. They sympathize with anyone who's struggling, but they will indulge in an opinion that the racists are just reasonable people with a crass sense of humor. This group is not the target, and as part of the majority racial group, they're protected from racism under the umbrella of recognized social hierarchy the privilege of being part of a majority. Which most of them don't want to admit, because they know that they didn't have to do anything to get an advantage someone else doesn't have. Most people don't like the feeling of guilt - as guilt comes from an attack from conscience, anyone with any sense of empathy will go into fight or flight mode - "Not my Fault, don't make me feel that way...it's not fair..."
And then, whomever is left over in that group, well - they're either the ones who don't put up with shit, or psychopaths who don't care one way or another, because they can't feel.

It takes actual feeling, actual caring about something to hate, just as it does to love. The greatest damage to justice and fairness is from people who don't care or are so self-absorbed they ignore situations where there is injustice, prejudice or the potential for calamity to others or to the world in general.

But because they're "home of the free, land of the brave - and everyone's entitled to their opinion" type of people, they don't say anything to the racist.
They'd do everything in their power to ensure their kids never grow up to be like those racist tools; they'd be painfully polite and live and let live sort of people. Someone's good natured, fair minded Mom or generous, wants everyone to be happy Dad. They're not going to confront anyone for their bigoted opinion on anything - race, sex, religion, culture, education, politics, disabilities, families, age - you name it; these mild-mannered middle of the roaders who will not say boo about "jokes" or "mis-speaking" by a family member or someone they know. They don't consider dog-whistles and little bullying cuts that make life miserable for the targets and otherwise cut whole groups of people down as weapons; they consider them poor manners - correctable in a child, but ignorable in an adult who obviously has boundary problems and may not have been raised right...

It's pitiable and most likely cowardly self-interest - especially when there's majority privilege on the line. But racism is not the driver of their inaction.

You and I, and a good number of the posters on this board are the type to confront.
These people aren't. They're comfortable if they're in a herd, and will attach themselves to the nearest group that will accept them and not demand too much from them.
And they never contemplate which way that herd is going.

Dont forget the 88 generals.

I thought at the time it was an odd number then I found out this.
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2008/10/white_supremacists_by_the_numbers.html
White Supremacists by the Numbers

What's up with 14 and 88? And what about the shaved heads and white tuxedos?

88 and 14. As the Times article explained, the number 88 represents the phrase "Heil Hitler," because H is the eighth letter in the alphabet. White supremacists are also fond of the number 18 to represent the initials A.H. (Other tight-knit groups use a similar code: The Hells Angels, for example, are attached to the number 81.)

The late David Lane, a member of the Ku Klux Klan and co-founder of a white-power revolutionary group, detailed his philosophy in an article called "88 Precepts." (Precept No. 11: "Beware of verbose doctrines.&quot The number 14 refers to a 14-word mission statement he wrote while propagandizing from federal prison: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.
