The idea that Democrats are really responsible for racism and bigotry has got to be the most insane claim there is. Yet this reverse logic seems to work on some voters. I just do not understand the complete convolutedness of this election. You really have to be demented to believe such a claim.
Such claims are revisionist history on steroids. It is like blaming he Jews for the Holocaust and their own deaths. Such claims are mass derangement on a grand scale. And there are no words in any language to explain where we are going right now.

I am not sure if you were throwing it out there like "this would never happen" or if it was a comparison of some sort. There are far left (they plotted with the Nazis...they created "sacrifices" in order to colonize Palestine) and right (they were a disease on the economy...they were working with foreign sources to bring down the new German government) extremes who do blame Jews for the Holocaust. There are also all those in-between the extremes who find excuses for "somewhat" blaming the Jews for their own deaths (How did so few Germans manage to control so many Jews? Why were Jews so passive and not resist in large numbers?)
As to the premise, I don't think we can lay responsibility of racism and bigotry at the feet of the Republicans either, as sad as it is, it was a collaborative effort of the body politic, the real issue, in my mind, is how many ignore, justify, or even exemplify racism and bigotry from the right/Republican party, in stark contrast to the Democrats. The Democrats are much better than the Republicans in this area, but there are many areas of improvement needed, and many who do not think this is true, which is part of the problem...denial.

(10,602 posts)Trump & the GOP are further denigrating the minorities they seek support from. In a way they are saying that minorities are too ignorant and stupid to understand that it is the GOP that has stood in the way and Trump would make their situation worse.
The GOP since even before Nixon have engaged in sophisticated plots to undermine the civil rights movement as well as La Raza, black organizations and Asians.
The war on drugs itself was a well disguised plan to dismantle civil rights by incarcerating young blacks who might become future leaders. And that same plan undercut blacks and other minorities deliberately.
The problem is that the GOP has succeeded in so many ways. This new tactic is so disingenuous and despicable. It deserves severe punishment of the GOP and its allies. Sadly that punishment won't happen.

(54,014 posts)I said we share a burden in regards to racism and other forms of bigotry, and we need to acknowledge it. It is true the GOP and Trump are making spectacles of themselves, but this is also not new. The Republican party, as you indicated, has been doing this for a long time. Much of what they do is so "in your face" it is hard to believe there are those out there who fall for their lies and misdirection.

(10,602 posts)They seem to think that their ploy blaming Democrats implies minorities are too stupid to understand that they are being played. It is more than obvious the GOP is a racist party. I call it the Republiklan party. I perhaps did not make my reply clear enough.

(54,014 posts)I don't disagree. I just don't think the Democratic party is sinless. I think I have made it very clear the tactics of the GOP are by and far away some of the most repugnant seen, especially this current election cycle. Most people will be able to see through their tactics, except those who don't want to see and those who think their lies are truth.

(54,014 posts)They also use our support for multiculturalism as an example of our trying to exert control on minorities in order to create chaos. It is amazing the gymnastics some can employ in order to blame minorities for tragedies to their communities.

(13,390 posts)if we are going to move forward. Racial anxieties were exploited by Democrats as well as republicans. There was a belief that "tough on crime" was a winning strategy and it could never have been doubted that that strategy would exploit minorities.
Democrats have contributed and denying that is a useless exercise. Bill Clinton acknowledges his role in what would become mass incarceration and has admitted that he was wrong.
The important difference is between past as prologue and a willingness to learn from past mistakes.
