Carrying a weapon in your hand is going to get a reaction from LEO. I am researching now to determine if you can open carry in North Carolina in your hand. I read a long document put out by NC on the laws in the state, and it does not address the question

The pro gun sites seen to think it is a no brainer that you should never have your handgun out of its holster in public unless you are planning on using it. Same goes for low carry of long guns (these should be slung on the back).

We really need to see the video in North Carolina to understand what actually happened. It would be quite the conspiracy if it was actually a book and a gun was planted.
