Terence Crutcher Shooting: Tulsa County District Attorney Charges Officer Shelby With Manslaughter
by Daniella Silva
An Oklahoma police officer has been charged with manslaughter for the fatal shooting of an unarmed black man, the Tulsa County District Attorney announced Thursday.
Officer Betty Shelby was charged with manslaughter in the first degree for the shooting of Terence Crutcher on Friday night, Tulsa County District Attorney Steve Kunzweiler said at a press conference Thursday.
Crutcher, 40, was shot and killed as he approached his SUV with his arms raised late Friday. The incident was caught on police helicopter video.

(10,497 posts)She was obviously frustrated with him for not obeying her commands, so she either took it out on him or was too scared and over-reacted. We will probably never know, but if these cops start getting charged and convicted this epidemic of unjustified shootings of un-armed black men will slow waay down!

(7,581 posts)these murdering cops need to be held accountable for their actions...let's hope the same thing happens in Charlotte.

(10,952 posts)She also had one or two Protecitve Orders filed against her before she became a cop. I would guess that she probably doesn't really have any problem taking someone on.
If you look at both the helicopter video and the dashcam video from the backup cops, she should face criminal charges.
She claimed fear for her life and that she thought he was going to reach for a weapon.
Based upon the helicopter video it is clear that both doors on the driver side were closed. The victim walked up to the driver door and had his hands raised. The voice of one of the cops in the helicopter truly did make him a dead man walking. His comment set the situation up to back up a cop if a cop shot the guy.
Based upon the dash cam video there were at least 3 cops at the rear of the passenger side of the car looking at the guy. They should have been plenty close enought to note that the window of the driver side was closed.
If you saw the interview with Benjamin Crump by the driver's side of the car it is verified that the window was shut because of the blood splatter on the window from the victim.
For the victim to reach for a weapon he would have either had to 1) open the door of the car (which he didn't) or lower his hands to reach into his pockets (he didn't).. His hands were in the air.
Criminal charges are appropriate and are not being filed just because she iw a woman. Not too long ago criminal charges were filed against an older white male who served as a Reserve Deputy for the Tulsa Couty Sheriff's Dept. He is serving time. Instead of tasering his victim he pulled out his gun and shot that guy dead.
I would say that law enforcement officials in the Tulsa area more aware of the consequences of the most recent shooting and the Proscutor has acted accordingly.

(19,379 posts)Yes, it appears from the video that this was a murder, but because it happened in the line of duty the defense would be able to sway the jury away from a murder conviction and then she'd walk. At least she may do some time, as crappy as it is that it'll only be for a manslaughter conviction.

(10,952 posts)If the Jurors become aware of this woman's background I doubt that she will come across as sympathetic. A decent Prosecutor should be able to obtain a conviction.

(19,379 posts)A murder conviction requires beyond reasonable doubt, and my guess would be at least a couple jurors could be swayed that way.

(10,952 posts)enough to have seen that the guy was really no immediate threat, the failure to achieve a conviction of the shootere will not bode well for the Tulsa PD as they will look like idiots.

(10,952 posts)1. The cop had cleared the car (to make sure that there were no weapons in it) before she even approached the guy.
2. The cop claimed that he was reaching in the window. The video from the helicopter shows that the window was all the way up. The is confirmed by the blood splatter on the window. She already knew that there were no weapons in the car (See No. 1).
Maximum sentence she might face is 4 years in prison.
