I am now inundated with ads about bug removal companies. I guess cookies are truly on the ball. I was not really concerned about the constant ads when I ordered some underwear on line but....geeze, bug removal companies above the DU pages?? This is too much. I hope I remember to delete cookies every few hours and hope these companies miss me. I guess this is the price I pay but it is a pain in the backside.
Maybe I just don't know how to use the internet. I really don't want to see ads from every company that offers whatever I might want as I search. Phooey!

(135,425 posts)I like ADBLOCK PLUS-I never see an ad, anywhere. It's wonderful.
The only places that demand that I take the ad blocker down are pretty much places I don't want to visit, anyway (e.g. Forbes). I look at those, if there's a link someone has sent me that is germane, in an incognito window.
I remember, for a while there, people were complaining about ads here at DU featuring a giant purple vibrator and Ann Coulter book flogging (not in the same ad, mind you--hee hee)! That was several years ago, though, during the Bush regime!!!

(135,425 posts)I disabled my ad blocker to have a look at it, simply because there was so much agita and discontent surrounding the image.
It was also a very intense shade of purple, too!
I saw the 'banner ad' and it was impossible to miss--quite the spectacle!

(7,473 posts)I have been a member of DU since 2005. I donated for years. In 2008, I became a widow and then shortly after, lost my job.
Since, at my age, jobs were scarce, I did volunteer work for a local charity. I remained there for 5 years.
I live on Social Security only. When your time comes, I hope things are better but please note that at about $13,000 a year, there are no extra dollars. Not for DU or anything else.
To those of you for whom money is no problem, Kudos. For the rest of us, it is a crisis.
Sometimes wonder if I will eat or if I will feed my cat.
I am trying to keep my house. Taxes take a huge portion of my very limited finds. Then there are things like utilities and insurances.
What a big party I have with all the extra dollars.
Maybe I will win the lottery---except have no money to buy a ticket.
Walk in my shoes or those of others before casting stones.

(3,447 posts)...'Self-destructing cookies'? While I would also recommend some other addons to go with it, they're not all quite as user-friendly as SSC is. This one will, as it's name implies, destroy any cookie after a period of time (mine are every 30 seconds, for instance) except for those you specifically tell it not to.
If you think you can handle more (ie, you've got some computer literacy) I'd suggest UBlock Origin and NoScript. NS is simple (it's seriously set it and forget it) but UBlock requires some work. As there are vids and other things about it, I'll leave that to you to investigate.
Hope this can help you some!

(21,506 posts)This does not clear them every 30 seconds but every time you close the browser. If that is not enough use chrome incognito mode and no history whatsoever is saved.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/2846020/how-to-automatically-delete-your-cookies-every-time-you-close-your-browser.html
Click on the menu "hamburger" icon in the upper right corner and select Settings > Show advanced settings... > Privacy and then tap the Content settings button.
In the next window that opens, under Cookies, select the radio button that says "Keep local data only until you quit your browser."
Press Done at the bottom of the window, close the settings tab, and that's it.
Firefox
Click on the "hamburger" icon in the upper right corner and select Options. Then in the window that opens, click on the Privacy tab. Under History, click the drop down menu next to "Firefox will:" and select Use custom settings for history.
A number of check boxes will automatically appear. Most of the defaults should be fine, but you want to change the drop down menu next to "Keep until." Change that setting to I close Firefox (i.e. keep cookies until I close Firefox).
As an option at the bottom of the history section, Firefox also lets you clear all your browsing history when you close Firefox, but that is not selected by default. Do so if you'd like.
Once you're done click OK and that's it.
Internet Explorer
Automatically deleting cookies every time you shut down Internet Explorer isn't as obvious as it is with the other two browsers. To do so, click the gear icon in the upper-right corner and select Internet Options.
Open the General Tab in the window that appears. Under the Browsing History section, check the box next to "Delete browser history on exit." If you'd like, you can click the Delete button underneath to customize exactly which settings are flushed every time you close IE, though cookies are wiped by default when you enable the "Delete browser history on exit" option.
Then click OK and you're ready to go!
