General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI've noticed new behavior in public places.
I meet a lot of people in my job, I am in courts frequently, elevators, halls, court rooms, law offices, etc.
People are going out of their way to be nice to one another. Regardless of color, sex, socio-economic standing, age, it seems that Trump has brought out the best in people. Lots of "please," "hellos" to complete strangers, and more. Cops are engaging in conversation, total strangers are making eye contact and talking to one another.
The more vile and outlandish that Trump becomes, the more people seem to be making a clear choice and effort to reject his behavior, and is seems like no one has any problem in actively being nice.
I don't know about your nape of the forest, but this is Chicago-land. While we have always been good to strangers and tourists, there is a marked change in people's behavior. I once heard a furriner from New Jersey describe Chicago as having people almost as cold as our winters.
Has anyone else noticed a change? Excepting the trumpenstein activists, of course.

My sweetie and I were watching green bay, sound off, (she's a YUGE fan) while I was playing the debate, sound on, on the iPad. The conversation went like, "WHAT DID HE JUST SAY?" to "Great pass, Rogers!"
A stable, polite "Nice" (his words) person Trump is not.

It took this NY city girl a while to adopt the same behavior.

(4,225 posts)This area is a hot bed for Trump. There are trump signs, billboards, Confederate flags, etc., everywhere. We Hillary supporters have to keep under the radar. Gun permits have been selling like mad since Mr. Obama came in to office. This is NOT a nice place.

(14,564 posts)I moved away in great part because I just generally did not like the people where I lived, mean sprited and back stabbling.
I lived there during the Bill years and I never got how they were so unhinged about him, but I was younger and naive about these things then. I drove through Westmoreland County a few weeks ago and it was Trumpstanigan, not to my surprise.
I now live in a slightly conservative area that will go Trump pretty clearly, but the people are infinitely more decent.

(4,225 posts)We are seriously thinking of relocating...we are in Westmoreland County. It is really very scary here.

(51,559 posts)Diverse crowds seem to be getting more polite. But not Trump's base. Trump Republicans seem to be losing their minds and are ruder than ever.

(17,305 posts)And I practice the sort of behavior you're referring to with everyone. Most are very pleasant in return. Life is largely a "get what you give" situation. There are exceptions, of course. But if you spend your day pissing in others' Corn Flakes, then it's going to catch up with you eventually.

(20,692 posts)At the grocery store I saw a young man pull a 12lb bag of frozen chicken wings out of his cart, slam it down on the side shelf next to the self-check register, ring up all of the rest of his groceries, and walk away, leaving it there to defrost.
I was in line behind him and picked it up as soon as I could (he was still there) and handed it to one of the register monitors while it was still frozen. She said people do it all the time.
People are pushy driving, beating you to the door, walking right into you, it's not good. I see it in my students, too.
Lots of bad behavior, now that it's so "fashionable."

After discussions with some others, we seem to agree that focusing on tolerance and kindness is the best medicine for all the bad vibes out there.

(5,169 posts)Maybe it is because I am larger than average that people are scared to be rude to me? They are not being nice to me because I am nice to them, they are nice to me because I intimidate them? Damn. And all this time I thought it was a reflection of my desire to be polite and encouraging.
Are you SURE they are not just reflecting the vibe they feel from you?

(29,503 posts)I am off and running. Sometimes, I feel like I could write a book, "The Pedestrian's Guide to Successful Street Navigation," lol, complete with half-block rules, timing commute with the ebb and flow of crowds, how, when and why to avoid Times Square, and more!

(12,631 posts)although it's a red area and many of them are rabid red. But they reliably sort the 2 sizes of shopping carts into the 2 lane cart corral and last week when my head merely turned a bit to look in the next row of cars for mine, a woman stopped her car and asked if I needed help finding my car. Of course, I do the same. I believe it's because it's uncrowded, largely homogeneous and life is easy and low-cost here
